Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

One of the nameless one billion battery chickens that die each year in the UK because of peoples demand for chicken eggs died this morning sometime after 6.30 am.
But, this hen wasn't nameless. She was called Lima.

I know that it is little comfort, but at least you were able to give her some comfort and peace, and the best of chicken life in your time with her. She got to experience being cared for. Rest in peace Lima.

So sad to hear about Lima. Like Molpet, I felt like she was someone I knew.

Lima's energy was very strong and will probably stay around the allotments for awhile until she fully crosses over.

After all the suffering Lima must have experienced in a battery, there is a small victory in offering her the attention, care, freedom, and most importantly, the dignity with which she was able to live out the end of her life. A poignant and bittersweet and tiny triumph, but a triumph over cruelty nonetheless. It matters.

Yesterday I was feeling quite melancholy as I was cleaning out the coop. I could sense that Tina was getting ready to move her brood inside -- they had definitely outgrown the broody apartment. Cleo always slept in a plastic laundry hamper I had modified for her after her bumblefoot treatments. I was removing it to make space for the new generation and Cleo's presence was so strong in that spot I just had to sit down on the floor inside the coop and weep a little.

Then I went for a walk and saw that Lima had died.

I took these photos for her and would like to offer them in lieu of planting a flower or tree on her grave.

Be at peace, Lima. You are loved, and will be missed.

New follower, been quietly reading & just caught up.
So sorry to read about Lima but as others have said, she managed to live her best chicken life when you arrived & made the very most of it. Feel privileged to have been a remote part of her all too short life.
:hugs

Lots of Tax for lurking in the background for so long

Ohhhhh, tax.:wee
Happy hatch day Bub bub.
Whereabouts in the UK are you? You can fill in your location on your profile page.

Been a while since I did more than react to posts, but I’m finding myself extra moved by Lima.

At happy hour, I’ll pour some on the curb for her. Will also tell the bees when the rain lets up. The same has gone for Miss Cleo @TropicalChickies and for the awesome dear Mr. Bumbles @no fly zone and for your beautiful EE, @Iluveggers. Keeping the captivating, much loved Miss Skeksis in my thoughts, too.

I’m sure I’m missing one or two in that list since going into lurk mode but have been silently sending good will. Life's been hectic, but I still regularly read this thread of authentic humans sharing thoughts and resources that open our minds.

I'll try to contribute more again in the future. For now, tax: photos from a spring day when late-morning light was extra nice.

Bringing it back to Lima, how awesome that, as hard as her life was in the first few chapters, it culminated playing in the garden and eating delicious meals, being named, loved, and, of course, internationally known. All the ❤️
