Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Been a while since I did more than react to posts, but I’m finding myself extra moved by Lima.

At happy hour, I’ll pour some on the curb for her. Will also tell the bees when the rain lets up. The same has gone for Miss Cleo @TropicalChickies and for the awesome dear Mr. Bumbles @no fly zone and for your beautiful EE, @Iluveggers. Keeping the captivating, much loved Miss Skeksis in my thoughts, too.

I’m sure I’m missing one or two in that list since going into lurk mode but have been silently sending good will. Life's been hectic, but I still regularly read this thread of authentic humans sharing thoughts and resources that open our minds.

I'll try to contribute more again in the future. For now, tax: photos from a spring day when late-morning light was extra nice.

Bringing it back to Lima, how awesome that, as hard as her life was in the first few chapters, it culminated playing in the garden and eating delicious meals, being named, loved, and, of course, internationally known. All the ❤️

^ 3 chicks doing the trapezes. 7 weeks now.
The bantam Vorwerk boy is showing his wattles.

^ Another boy im the middle. The colouring seems to be typical male too for Bantam Sussex red porcelain.

All together: 5 girls and 4 boys.

Kraai was pestering the chicks at roost time. I (stupidly) let her outside to cool off. But she didn’t mind at all and took a big jump in to the pear tree. 🙄 💤

One of the nameless one billion battery chickens that die each year in the UK because of peoples demand for chicken eggs died this morning sometime after 6.30 am.
But, this hen wasn't nameless. She was called Lima.

I am happy for the life you gave her.

I ended up letting my broody Marans sit on some fertile eggs. She’s only been half-serious the last few times she’s tried, and none of my flocks eggs are fertile, but she just turned one and I caved. Here is the result, as payment of tax:

Two little chicks! 😊
That pic is CALENDAR WORTHY!

congratulations! :jumpy:celebrate
what breed hatching eggs did you get for her? Are we looking at one blonde and one chestnut colour chick?
They are just a barnyard mix from the family farm. The blonde one came out of a brown egg (maybe Orpington?) and the striped brown came out of a blue egg (legbar or Easter Egger). The rooster is a blue & mahogany EE mix. She’s doing such a good job! 😊

Lurker Tax ...
Sorry they're so blurry. I have a dinosaur of an old flip phone ...

This is Gem, my balding bantam cochin, and her latest brood. I gave her a batch of what I was sure were "too old to hatch" eggs after she abandoned two nests but kept going broody. I now have nine ... NINE "mongrel" babies. Five are a cross of my RC Nankin rooster over SC Nankin pullets - a no-no for the show ring but sometimes necessary for keeping good fertility in the line ... gonna be a lot of weeding in my future, I'm sure. The rest are true mutts - same RC rooster over my lone bantam EE hen. I may just keep them in hopes of some colored eggs. Mama Summer lays a gorgeous pale aqua, so I may get lucky. I have to admit, though ... "Nankin" babies with poofy cheeks are absolutely adorable!

Thank you for taking good care of Lima, @Shadrach , which allowed the last part of her life to be good. FYI I never heard back from the ex-batt rescue organization that was linked earlier on this thread. I hope it was because all those hens were adopted out. It continues to be next to impossible to adopt ex-batt hens in the U.S., unless one knows someone directly connected to egg farms.

Unfortunately not a rural part of Bucks, perhaps one day…..
I used to go to Aldbury a lot in my youth (a long time ago:p) You've got the Chilterns close by and Berko used to be an interesting town.
I was dragged up in Hetfordshire not far from you.

Looks like you have a baseball team -- the "Mongrels"!
