Four hours today. Occasional sunshine and large dark grey clouds that looked wet but didn't leak a drop.
Ella is sicker than she was yesterday.
To add to her woes she got pecked quite badly on her comb at some point today. She's still eating and drinking but not enough. She laid an egg yesterday and the egg was fine. Good shape, nice strong shell, clean. There is nothing to indicate she has salpengitis or EYP. She's mite and louse free and apart from her stance looks in good condition. I don't know what's wrong with her.
Carbon is the likely culprit for the comb injuries. No Lima and the scrabble for top spot is part of the problem. Fret isn't interested. Carbon has never liked Ella. It may have something to do with Ella's attitude which is a bit heavyweight.
It's all going to run a bit rough for a while if Ella stays alive and for future plans I think.
I introduced a mash with extras as the main evening feed and that went down okay. When I've gpt sourcing whole grains. peas. and a few other bits this mash will be a permanent afternoon feed. They all will still eat layers pellets when hungry but given a choice they would rather eat just about anything else. I can't say I blame them.
I tucked Ella under my chair where she stayed most of the afternoon. I made her walk a bit back and forth along the path just to check that she was still properly mobile and when it came to pieces of my beef sandwhich she ate her share with enthusiasm.
If C had consulted me before the December rehoming fit things would be rather different now. Matilda would still be there as senior hen, there would be one other Legbar and two other Ex Battery hens.
There is a word for people like C and that is the proper use of the word evil. Not in some epic biblical way; just harmfull, intentional or not. There are people like this in the world and all the understanding, therapy and tolerance will never make them anything else.
Anyway, it is what it is as they say and I have to make the best of it.
Coop wet wipe out with disinfectant out is a daily chore at the moment. It's easy enough and helps to ensure that the coop stays clean of any bacteria. No sign of any mites I'm pleased to write. It will give it another going over with a blowtorch this weekend.
