Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Four hours today. Occasional sunshine and large dark grey clouds that looked wet but didn't leak a drop.
Ella is sicker than she was yesterday.:( To add to her woes she got pecked quite badly on her comb at some point today. She's still eating and drinking but not enough. She laid an egg yesterday and the egg was fine. Good shape, nice strong shell, clean. There is nothing to indicate she has salpengitis or EYP. She's mite and louse free and apart from her stance looks in good condition. I don't know what's wrong with her.
Carbon is the likely culprit for the comb injuries. No Lima and the scrabble for top spot is part of the problem. Fret isn't interested. Carbon has never liked Ella. It may have something to do with Ella's attitude which is a bit heavyweight.
It's all going to run a bit rough for a while if Ella stays alive and for future plans I think.

I introduced a mash with extras as the main evening feed and that went down okay. When I've gpt sourcing whole grains. peas. and a few other bits this mash will be a permanent afternoon feed. They all will still eat layers pellets when hungry but given a choice they would rather eat just about anything else. I can't say I blame them.

I tucked Ella under my chair where she stayed most of the afternoon. I made her walk a bit back and forth along the path just to check that she was still properly mobile and when it came to pieces of my beef sandwhich she ate her share with enthusiasm.

If C had consulted me before the December rehoming fit things would be rather different now. Matilda would still be there as senior hen, there would be one other Legbar and two other Ex Battery hens.
There is a word for people like C and that is the proper use of the word evil. Not in some epic biblical way; just harmfull, intentional or not. There are people like this in the world and all the understanding, therapy and tolerance will never make them anything else.

Anyway, it is what it is as they say and I have to make the best of it.

Coop wet wipe out with disinfectant out is a daily chore at the moment. It's easy enough and helps to ensure that the coop stays clean of any bacteria. No sign of any mites I'm pleased to write. It will give it another going over with a blowtorch this weekend.

I know what you mean. It's easier to deal with really obviously nefarious people. Or at least call them out and stay away. But some -- and it sounds like C is one -- have this more insidious passive-aggressive control drama thing going on. It's super irksome because they often actually believe they are doing something good and are vainly self-righteous even when making things murky and difficult for other people. Annoyingly evil, ie double evil!

I have strange tax. This lovely Muscovy (?) Just showed up on our property in the last couple of days. When I talk to him and feed him, he wags his little ducky tail. With our pond, we have become a breeding ground for Canadian Geese, but this guy seems to be a solo act. The Chickens do not seem to mind him. We are on Fox watch, as we seem to have a mom and a couple of cubs that have taken up residence in one of our wild patches. Still pretty far away from the chickens but too close for me to sleep easy. We are taking it in turns to go out and shine the flashlight around and patrol the coop and run. I will try to get proper tax tomorrow. ;-)

One of the nameless one billion battery chickens that die each year in the UK because of peoples demand for chicken eggs died this morning sometime after 6.30 am.
But, this hen wasn't nameless. She was called Lima.

I'm so sorry Shad. You did very well by her ♡ and continue to educate us all.

Your name sake is still alive and fairing rather well. He has managed to keep a few hens around him. Gotten rather good looking and better behaved.

This rooster looks exactly like the one I saw in Shadrach's pictures from the place in Catalonia.

He does have some pretty nice colors, and he has turned out to be not as dumb as I originally thought lol. He was a pretty big nut last year and I felt kinda bad for naming him Shad 😂

I ended up letting my broody Marans sit on some fertile eggs. She’s only been half-serious the last few times she’s tried, and none of my flocks eggs are fertile, but she just turned one and I caved. Here is the result, as payment of tax:

Two little chicks! 😊
BYC photo contest entry?!?! 😍

I used to go to Aldbury a lot in my youth (a long time ago:p) You've got the Chilterns close by and Berko used to be an interesting town.
I was dragged up in Hetfordshire not far from you.
I was dragged up in Berko which is still interesting in parts though, like many places near here, an expensive dormitory town for London commuters. Chilterns are lovely in parts, not so much now that HS2 (high speed rail for those overseas) has really started tearing the place up. Unfortunately not going to be that fast or reach the places in the north where it is really wanted or needed anytime soon.
Some really interesting archaeology being found along the route including a ‘Woodhenge’ and an Anglo-Saxon burial site locally & 2 Roman style busts plus a head & Roman hexagonal glass jug a few miles away which got the archaeologists really excited.
https://www.hs2.org.uk/building-hs2/archaeology/ if interested. We had encamped protesters including the son of Swampy for a while who created an rather impressive pallet village until they were removed.
