Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I see the newest brood of young roosters going through the motions of crowing. Can't wait for them to do so as when they chime in with the others it will be a real boys' chorus.
:D I'm looking at the distinct possibility that 3 out of the last 4 eggs that hatched recently are roosters. Patucha's chick Solo has doubled in size in the past week and is taking on all comers, little hackles raised, beady eyes and all.

Six months ago, it was 2 for 2.

If so, it's Roosters 5, Hens 1, so far this year.

Looks like I better get busy on a few more coops.

And get some earplugs.:th

Three hours and it stayed dry. What little rain fell yesterday had almost no impact on the soil. Lots of plots suffering from the weather despite being watered.
Henry, Carbon and Fret seem well. Fret is still moulting.

I'm looking after Spoko while the eldest is away for a few days so I don't go home at night which is why I'm posting during the day.
He's old (13) and grumpy and the eldest despite trying hasn't been able to find anyone else who can cope with him. He's losing mobility in his back legs, he's deaf we think he has dementia.

Sorry about Spoko. Do be careful, they can get aggressive with dementia.

It looks like I'm going to be moving. I don't know when, it depends on when the next flat becomes available but I'm on the list with a priority application.

I'll be walking distance, 1.1 miles by road and a bit less along the river, from the flat to the allotments, A 1.1 mile walk takes me about 20 minutes on reasonably flat terrain.
I'll also be walking distance form the eldest which she is pleased about and an easy bus ride to the youngest.

I often spend more than 20 minutes waiting for buses. The same train line I use also runs to a station 8 minutes walk from the flat complex.
