Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I am just at a point where some of my babies need some nail and spur care. Goldie's spurs are quite sharp and pointy looking. Did a search and this was the first thing that I saw:

https://www.cacklehatchery.com/how-to-trim-a-roosters-spurs-and-how-not-to/

I think that this is a little barbaric/overkill. Then I found this:

You've got the right idea. There is no need to cut or remove a roosters or cockerels spurs in all but the most extreme cases.
Take a nail file or fine engineers file and file the points off. It's only a matter of removing say 1mm to round them off.
You might check their toenails while you are at it and give them a quick going over with a nail file if the tips are a bit ragged.

Wheeew. I can't imagine that it is not painful to cut into the quick. :-(

I was thinking of using one dry for catching and relocating mice.

There are so many mouse-friendly fields near work, which is far from home. Seems like relocating is a good option.
People keep releasing by me. I have talked to a couple and told them my cousin doesn't need mice or chipmunk eating her crops. But it's just grass they say. It's HAY I tell them.
I have tracked opossum and raccoons back to my side drive in the snow. I caught one person and they said they didn't see the house way back behind the trees.
I have caught 104 racoons in less than 4 years. About the same in opossums. Most won't go in a box trap and are very friendly.... tearing open so they can get in attics, walls and sheds.

Yes, they're poodle mixes. Spaniel and Golden Retriever. They're lovely dogs and just right for the type of home I have.

I have plenty of annual leave each year, and long service leave accruing. When the time comes (I did say it would be after the cat has died and I have reason to believe that will be at least a few years yet), I'll be home to give the pups time and training.

Also by that time, the chicken's run will be even more secure than it already is as it will have deeper perimeter paving than it already has, as well as any other security measures I decide to implement between now and then. While the chicken run is excessively spacious for the hens, I like to give them the backyard to roam in each day, at least for a few hours. This can happen while the dogs are out for walks or inside the house. I'm fortunate to live somewhere with very few predators.
Sounds great. Here in the states we call them goldendoodles, they are very popular. LOTS of grooming required, though. Cocker spaniel poodle crosses are called cockapoos. I haven't met any Springer poodle crosses yet. There has been an explosion of poodle crossed with everything here lately. We groomers call them all doodles, it's just easier.

In my case, it's an airport. No farming for miles and miles.

LOL I'm sure they don't want your mice either. I worked at a college and they had a mouse and racoon problems. They used sticky traps to catch the mice thinking the instructors and secretaries could just throw them away. Needless to say a screaming mouse caught didn't go over well.
I dislike glue traps for anything but fleas and flies

10.30am to 7.30pm with a lunch break. Dry and reasonably warm at 19C.

I watched Henry and the chicks eating. Henry would take a bit of food from the bowl and then the chicks would scratch a bit out while they were eating. Henry worked his way around the bowl picking up the pieces the chicks scratched out.
I thought the pictures of Henry eating alongside the single chick rather endearing. Even though the chicks are growing they are both still tiny compared to Henry.

When I get stung by fire ants I put a baking soda and water paste wherever I was stung. It not only seems to help the burning, but also seems to reduce my body's reaction. I believe it is because the stings are acidic, and sodium bicarbonate is alkaline, thus neutralizing the sting. I have no scientific studies to prove it, but it works for me.
For wasps its the opposite. Last year I used a strong vinegar to calm the stings (I had 2).
I use Flonase. Everything else puts me to sleep. And then I wake up with jitters, as if I drank a pot of coffee.
I use Fexofenadine in the evening against overreactions on lots of histamine-rich food like spinach. It has little effect on sleeping. In the morning its all back to normal. And it helps for insect stings too (a bit).

i wanted a nice plushie likeness of her. i already have a big photo of her framed, as well as a smaller one of the family in holiday garb with her sitting on my lap rocking her little santa hat.

@Shadrach here is the smaller framed photo

I have a good painter friend who does a lot of commissioned pet portraits. Very sensitive fella who really listens to his clients. I can pass his info if you're interested.

I'm sure they don't want the mice they've already got, but it's a known mouse relocation space. I suppose I could leave the mice in the wetlands instead.
