Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Paprika's chicks are 4 weeks old today and mum decided a family bath was in order to get the day off to a good start :p

why is it terrible news for those who want to raise heritage breeds? It is aimed at commercial units. Commercial birds are fragile, raised in essentially sterile environments, given vaccines and antibiotics prophylactically, fed just to grow fast or lay lots of eggs, and have been bred for generations with no regard to disease resistance or longevity. They are extremely delicate health wise. Heritage breeds are much more robust, and naturally already have better resistance to more or less every chicken pathogen, including potentially AI strains that will knock down commercial chickens.

I see it as something that the powers that be will use to diminish ppl's ability to self-sustain. Just come in and euthanize whole flocks of ppl's chickens just so they can be replaced with these GMO'd ones.

I don't think anyone can force anyone else to keep chickens if they don't want to.

As for wiping out heritage and mixed breeds, why would that be a good public policy?

I'm not sure hypotheticals of that order are helpful really. The scientists trying to develop this haven't even got it sorted on lab specimens yet, and heavy handed euthanasia by governmental authorities is currently reserved for demonstrably infected flocks in a handful of countries, and even there incompetence ensures failure to achieve goals. I've done a lot of historical research, and the powers that be are usually far less capable than people assume them to be. Most of what happens was intended by nobody and out of everyone's control.

My Dad had a saying: when you think there’s a conspiracy, it’s probably just a cock-up.

Three hours today. Grey but dry on the weather front.
Seen the flat. I've said I'll take it. It's even smaller than the flat I'm in.:lau
Had a long chat with C this afternoon and we're on the same page at last. I showed them the draught copy of the field memebership agreement and they were very happy with it.
Field meetings tomorrow morning and late afternoon. Not expecting much resistance to the forthcoming changes.
Henry is growing more feathers than he's shedding. Carbon on the other hand is looking very scrappy and isn't eating much of anything except what she can forage and the fish I brought her.
