Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I second that, though the changing definition of 'organic' is undermining it in the US, and where the US leads, the rest of the world generally follows. We're usually about 10 years behind. 'Regenerative' seems to be the new term to capture the intended practices.
big ag is diabolical

Two and a half hours today. Slightly warmer today mainly due to a lighter wind.
The soil on my plot in the places the chickens have been digging and scratching was dry enough today for Henry to set about having a bath. The hens had a go but it wasn't quite dry enough to keep them there for long. Lots of testing other patches of soil.
I did Mow legs and feet again this afternoon and then coated Digs with Vaseline. He's just starting to show early signs of SLM.
Much to my surprise Mow jumped on to my lap when I gave out some chopped walnut and blueberries this afternoon and she stayed there for a while after the food had run out.

I posted this on another thread last month; besides the snippet I give there, you might want to listen to the podcast linked there

The fact that they seem to classify almost anything as organic, here, is worrisome. We use heirloom seeds (trusting that they are, indeed heirloom as promised.) in our garden We do not use commercial fertilizers, opting for making our own compost and use companion planting methods, we do not use any herbicides or pesticides anywhere on our property, but we are not on an island under a bubble so we are still exposed to whatever is in the environment. I assume, that this makes true organic food production nearly impossible for even the most sincere organic farmer, but we have to keep trying.

It's been a beautiful day for gardening, and I got a lot of shrub and tree pruning done just before things really take off. The girls were busy too: 13 eggs today!!! :p
Wet all day today, nice day yesterday so took my 4 chooks on a “field trip” to the allotment. They had a whale of a time & I got a decent amount done but forgot to take pics :(:(

Will have to remember next time
