Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

My first ever pipped egg! Morinth is ever gentle with me and just fretted to the side while I took this pic and then let her re cover it. :)

Cayenne pepper was also mentioned along with: Herbal Anti-Inflammatories ... Grape Seeds / Grape Seed Extract … Pumpkin Seeds … Yogurt … Dandelion. I wonder if grinding some pumpkin seed in a little yogurt.

I know you do not like to handle them too much, but maybe a gentle massage and a warm epsom salt soak? Goldie had a spell where he was limping, I checked for bumble foot and nothing, so I let it go for a bit to see if he worked it out on his own. He is a sweet boy, but hates being handled so I try to respect that, but when it started to limit his mobility, I did the bath and massage with him every day for a week and he recovered.
they get yogurt regularly here, and there are dandelions to forage whenever they want them.

I appreciate the idea, but I think Venka would be more stressed by handling and a bath than eased by it and massage.

I think a lot of people just haven't thought much about chickens. Initially some people are enthralled by their antics but after some serious obsevation one realises one is not seeing antics, mostly it's reasoned behaviour. That takes a while. Maybe I'm a bit slow but it took me five years of chicken watching before I had confidence in they know what they're doing; from there to date it's been trying to work out why and how they do what they do. It's the path to complete madness.:old:lol:
I didn't even want chickens until I saw a silkie. No, I don't have a silkie, but that Speckled Sussex was good enough to get me into them, hook, line, and sinker.

It's really interesting to watch these Bigs here and how they act. They don't have a rooster and seem to think I'm one. Especially in regards to food.

Ex Batts good afternoon one and all!

Tea is ready.

Temperature is in the 80s partly sunny 84% chance of rain.

Have a great day!

We’ve had 85 with 56% humidity & just enough drizzle / light rain to get the humidity up. Overnight forecast 68 with 96% humidity. Us Brits, particularly those of us of mature years, are not built for this kind of weather!
Chickens are staying mainly in the shade & rummaging about in the borders, very sensible.

My first egg hatched! What a magic feeling View attachment 3907755
Credit goes to Morinth, the sweetest broody hen in the world. Gave her a few extra blueberries.

Congrats on your first little chick! The feeling of seeing the little chicks peeping under or out of mum is always so special

Massive congratulations to Morinth!
