Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Ex Batts good morning one and all!

Tea is ready.

Temperature is in the 50s and clear.

Have a great day!

My chickens have decided to give me one or no eggs.

Would the drop in the temperature have anything to do with this?

They are moulting and have been giving me three eggs a day.

Mine are molting too. I'm getting one egg every other day from 6 hens.
I have 40 hens. They are molting.. or meat mutts that mainly lay in the spring and then 3 eggs a week .
I was getting 4 eggs a day for a couple weeks. But yesterday none 😭

Two hours today. It stayed dry and was on the chilly side at 10C.
I got the pullets again this evening and did their legs again. Mow is going to need quite a lot of work on her feet. She has been unlucky and inherited Henry's SLM propensity at it's worst.
Everybody got out onto the field for a couple of hours. Sylph couldn't wait once I opened the run up and flew over the fence.:D
I haven't seen an egg for months.

Fret's paid her dues, she hatched the next generation!

It's Mow that's slack. :rant

I always rescue the toads that get too close to my parent's porch. Growing up we had a dog that would eat them and then he'd be sick to his stomach from the poison.
That proves it: chickens are smarter than dogs. 😂

Oeps. Typooooh digs -> dogs

Yes, same here. I seems only Janice is still laying. Im afraid most hens started their winter break.

Katrientje and Black are both moulting.
Black looks a bit down from her moult.

I'm finding it difficult to get the time I would to spend with the chickens due to my messed up sleeping due to the shingles and a recent outbreak of family drama, and of course the weather.
Hope things improve sooner than later both for you and Ladies8.

I got tortured today by the physiotherapist. Necessary to be able to use my arm > 90%. So for my own well being on the longer term.

Whisky loves to be a cockerel model. Or is he up front to throw me a stinky eye?

I'm getting 0-3 eggs a day at the moment, from Betws, Dyffryn and Fez. Betws is either going to moult late or not at all this (her second) winter, Dyffryn went early and quick and looks to be repeating what she did last year, which is to lay XL eggs right through winter (yay!), and Fez did her broody bit in the summer then a mini moult, and resumed laying about a month ago; I expect her to lay through winter too.

With a bit of luck, Aberglasny and Sully will start laying before Christmas; they're 17 wks today, and Sully has started exploring the nests. I do hope she lays a distinctly coloured egg; one downside with hybrids is they all tend to lay one or another shade of brown, and it's got increasingly difficult to know who laid what just by looking at the shells.

Button, who was my best egg layer this year (18 days in a row, once), is still laying about 2 out of 3 days. I wish she'd stop and molt and get it over with before it gets really cold.
maybe she'll just keep laying through, as 2 of my best young layers did last year. Or is she already a few years old?
