I made it. A bit slower than usual.
Two hours today. Very damp due to the recent storm with some hazy sunshine late afternoon.
Needless to say the chickens were delighted to get out of the run and into the field.
Due to try out my third emergency chicken minder next week.

This was the crisis point between father Cillin (red rooster) and son Treacle when Treacle was around 18 months old.
Cillin had been rather hard on Treacle as fathers go. They had fought a few times before with Treacle backing down.
Cillin had his favourites and Treacle didn't bother them. There were two hens that had shown an interest in being Treacles hens rather than Cillin's, the two hens were Moon and Fudge. Fudge is the hen in the pictures below.
This was the point at which Fudge showed an obvious preference for Treacle but Cillin wasn't prepared to let her go. Yet another coop might have solved this problem and avoided the rift between father and son that developed after this fight.

The next fight Cillin lost and Treacle became the senior rooster and drove his father Cillin out of the tribes coop. He lived with me for a few weeks until I built him a small coop of his own.

Your point about roosters establishing leadership aside, seeing the Catalan crew again is a highlight of my day.

Well, we're up to 6 unconstrained males (only 2 technically cockerels but another 2 only recently graduated, and all under 3 years old) and we haven't had problems here, though 'too many' is nebulous; so the statement perhaps should be altered to *may* cause problems.

True about*may*. What happens at my place isn't true everywhere.

I had 16 chicks hatch this spring. 4 pullets , a dz cockerels, 2 went to predator. .. so 10 cockerels and 8 roosters with 40+ hens that aren't laying. Caught 5 cockerels going around ganging up and taking turns with the older slower unwilling hens. Chasing the ones they couldn't catch. Chasing pullets into the trees at roost time. Fighting among themselves...
OH and there was the hen with the twisted neck and an eye pecked out with footprint on her and a cockerel standing next to her.
I now have 4 cockerels. Things are much calmer.

I had a tame golden pheasant hen show up today. The turkeys wanted it gone and the cockerels had other ideas.

Cockerels photo bomb the pictures

I posted on FB and I found the owner...over the river and through the woods a couple miles.. Hen is in the house in a crate.
