Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

There is a huge storm coming up in Ireland/ NW England. Hope you are all safe!

We're over the bitter cold, and now are up to the low 20s F. Back down to 10 tonight, and then we're in a solid warm up: 30 on Saturday.

The ladies have been out in the run, huddled in the coop. Back out in the run, then huddled in the coop. No ill effects, so I'm letting them decide how to handle the single digit cold from here on out. I did keep the people door shut on the coop, just leaving the pop door open.

I also had added another bale of pine shavings, and they did make nests in it.

Yesterday evening I dropped the shade cloth sides to block some of the frigid breeze.

This morning it was 10°F!

It's very rare for this area to get that cold.

Tub waterer had an inch of ice on it.

But the flock was active.

This afternoon I collected two eggs. One was on the ground, just inside the door, and it was sort of pointed on one end.

There's a slight warming trend forecast for the weekend. :fl

Straw is much warmer for them.

Here we had just a little frost on and iff for a week/10 days. Glad the frost is over again. Time to prune the grape (missed that last autumn bc of my broken shoulder and many rainy weekends).

This afternoon I collected two eggs.
I have only one pullet whose laying now. 2 eggs in 3 days. I have no clue why her sister stopped laying.
The rest of the flock (3+ to 10+ yo) needs more sun to start laying again after their winter break.

Two hours today.
Looks like there was a bit of wind overnight. The green house went from this, damage from the last storm,

to this, last nights damage. There's broken glass everywhere.

The group treasurer and I got most of the glass up and the frame in more manageable sections for taking to the council tip.

The chickens were reluctant to venture far into the field. I guess the greenhouse must have made a lot of noise when it blew over. We've been cleaning up after this one ex member on and off for days.

More strong wind gusts to come apparently.

Round to the youngest for a chat and some dinner. By the time I headed home the rain had started again, the fast buses had stopped running so I caught a late train.
Standing at the station in the rain.
