Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I've spent many happy hours cracking wallnuts with a hammer, surrounded by chickens.

Two hours today. 5C and dry.
Both Sylph and Mow have small sores on their legs where they've shed lifted scales. The iodine in the Vaseline will help prevent infection but I'm going to treat them with Chlorhexidine which should stay active for longer.

Sylph has started fretting like her mother Fret since she's not been laying eggs and spending her time with mum Fret. Something scared them both on the field and they both ran back to the coop. The others looked but then carried on with whatever they were doing completely unconcerend.

Tull on the other hand is verging on reckless with her desire to forage. When I let them out of the coop run, Tull will eat a small amount of the supplied feed and head off to forage leaving the others behind. When I let them out into the field I keep losing sight of Tull because she's gone behind the compost bins and deeper into the orchard; not the safest of territories with unfavouable terrain for fast running.

From experience, black walnuts are way more resistant to being cracked than the walnuts I got in Europe.
I think I need an anvil!

Sounds like the perfect time for me is right now! Need to get some equipment asap. As it happens I am nearly out of a big bottle of maple syrup given to me by a Canadian friend so this is very timely.
Thank you all for sharing the knowledge. Perhaps those with black walnuts can also share how to open the nuts!
"Need to get some equipment asap"

One and a half hours today. 3C at the field and it felt colder. Everybody came out.
Tull is laying an egg every day and has taken to asserting her status of the egg layer, especially when her sister si concerned. It's hasn't looked like bad bullying but she's not past giving Sylph an I'm boss peck from time to time. I got Sylph's feet done and Chlorhexidined the sore patches on her leg.
