Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

the comedy of contractor errors continues: this morning someone from the same firm turns up to spread topsoil and reseed the area, not knowing that the pipe is still leaking. Left hand-right hand non-communication issues, or just because no-one in the firm does anything between 5pm on Friday and 10am on Monday?

And the topsoil to be delivered is on an 8-wheeler truck that can't get up the lane to the house. :th

Since topsoil and grass seed won't be needed till the leak is actually fixed, the pair of them aborted their jobs, took videos to show their bosses why they were doing so, and will try again another time, hopefully with the soil on a smaller vehicle.

Wasn't all the new 'smart' technology supposed to make things better? I see an inverse relationship between use of that word and actual ability.

Very clever indeed.

You must be glad you were at home to prevent they would have destroyed even more.

In my town there are continuously road blocks moving from one road to another because the are enforcing the e-networks. And sometimes back again. 💩
Another set of high voltage lines underground.
And they make fast-bike routes where cars can be guest on the bike-road 🚲 . This is going on for ages now.

One time they put up a sign the wrong way. Towards our dead end street. 🙀. No way we could get out anymore if someone would follow the signs.

Glad with google maps which is correct most of the times.

A warm and sunny two and a half hours.

Yesterday Henry stumbled and fell. I got there quickly, he was gaspingfor breath a toxic looking liquid dribbling from his mouth. At first I thought it was crop contents but once I opened his mouth it was evident that the liquid was coming from his trachea.:( I gently massaged his trachea and some more gunk squeezed out after which he breathed more freely.

He did come out of the run after I gave his tail a tap; he dozes a lot, and he did do a very small amount of picky foraging with Sylph who has been very attentive to Henry these last few days.
He ate a small amount of the regular feed today, maybe a quarter of a cubic inch, but ate soft cooked brown rice with some vitamins soaked in a couple of chopped prawns and squeezed into a couple of blueberries his metacam dose for the night.
He isn't following or leading the hens anymore. Mostly he stood in the sun or close by my chaor where the hens have been dust bathing. He has his head under his wing for a while when the hens were bathing so he's dozing.

Apparently he was out of the coop this morning and I assume he stays out all day.

So sorry to read about Henry :hugs :hugs :hugs
Thinking of him, his tribe, and you

Two and a half hours today. Warm for a while but dusk brought a chill to the air.
Got Henry's meds down him, gave everyone prawns, oats and chopped cabbage. Almost cut a finger off chopping the cabbage. My knife ia very sharp but the balde is short so the usual cooks chop doesn't work. Henry ate a little of everything and went and stood as you can see him while the hens bathed. That's Sylph with her head under Henry's arse. That's Sylph next to Henry on the roost bar in the last picture. A place she managed to keep despite some pecks from her sister Tull.
Henry did eat a bit of everything. I made sure he got most of the prawns and he ate a few mouthfulls of the supplied feed when I let them out of the coop run.

I was telling Henry how pleased I am with my last blood test results; no longer pre diabetic, liver function good to normal,, cholesterol levels and balance good and all achieved by a few changes in the food I eat; well, quite a lot of changes to be honest. I binned the statins the doctors prescribed months ago and the doctor was surprised I had managed to get my tests back into the normal ranges without the use of the drugs they give everyone with similar problems. The USA and England have a different scale for diabetes. I want to get two positions further down the scale if I can which will give me a bit more peak room.
As I said to Henry, we're both getting old and I look at the pair of us and think we've both seen better days.
He did walk around a bit. I went with him more often than not and encouraged him to take those few extra steps; something I should be doing as well. I did try to get him to dig in the compost piles but he really wasn't interested and a few half hearted swipes and off he went to stand by himself while I dug a bit more for the hens. He's losing weight down to 3.7 kilos from 4.2 kilos.:( I have similar issues with my weight but with the carefull eating and the aging and my body type it's to be expected. I suppose it must be similar for chickens as they reach pension age.:p
One day at a time...
