since @Shadrach asked me about posting some photos of my 'yard' on another thread, I thought it might be useful to put them here and show what sort of habitat my birds prefer to spend their time in, and which incidentally shows how 'pasture-raised' misses the mark as a label for supposedly the best sort of free ranging a chicken can get. Focusing photos on the chickens here often involves cropping out the environment they were in or only snapping them when they are on the lawn because that's the only time they are really visible.

as you can see from the last, even when they are on the grass of the main lawn, they are near its edge, close to the border. They spend relatively little time foraging on the lawn.

I think we’re working with about the same amount of space, but you’ve made yours much more chicken friendly. I’ve been getting a lot of ideas from both your photos, post and articles on the topic. Hoping to implement them in the next few weeks and months.

Not sure if you’ve answered this question before (and apologies if you have), but what are your experiences with foxes? Do most birds that find refuge in the undergrowth, bushes and hedges survive land predator attacks?

Why is it that the time people choose to act up is the same time when one has least pateince for it!

Two hours today. No ranging pictures; human stuff got in the way and then I had to clean Henry up. He's got maggot worms. That's technically fly strike and it's happened in the last three days, or at least the worms have. There is no wound that I can see but his feathers are disgusting, caked in wet shite. Hopefully I got most of them. It's difficult on your own. Hopefully it's just the shite the maggots are in and there isn't a wound.
He looked very sick today. He's gone to roost with a damp arse. I had him on my lap for a good half an hour cleaning his arse and getting some rooster booster into him with a syringe. There's blood in his droppings now.
Not at all sure where we go from here in a positive direction.
Sylph flew up on to my lap a couple of times while I was tending to Henry.
I was at the field until 21.30 with a head torch on trying to get things done.

Mow is in a nestbox.
