Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Two hours today. Drizzle with dry patches.
The ground with the black mesh on is my plot. There are onions under the mesh. Six courgette plants under the chicken wire crop guard. I've got some spinach, a couple of pea plants and a pepper plant growing on the plot.
I haven't done much with the plot this year; busy doing other things. The pigeons have already stripped the goosberries from the bushes on my plot. Never mind, next year the bushes will be in the cage and one never knows, I may get enough to make a crumble with. The fruit bushes and the rough the other side is for me and the chickens, the best bit. They'll like the courgette plants when and if they grow, particularly if they are large as last year. Great shade in the summer.

I just thought I would mention before anyone else makes comments about Mow's arse...that as you can see, it's not her arse, it's her legs. I don't know it that's any better in a hens eyes, big arse or legs like tree trunks.  One has to be so carefull with ones descriptions these day.:p

Mow is just Traditionally Built. ❤️

Happy Birthday Stilton. Is the hen grooming Stilton his favourite, or the top hen?
Neither, just broodermates. These 3 still roost in a pile, but Donna's head hen, and Stilton's favorites Ashley and Frida both died last year 😢

Not sure if we have a particularly lovey group, or maybe Stilton is a particularly affectionate rooster, but he has always enjoyed grooming from anybirdy who will oblige him, even hens through the fences in Merle's and Andre's groups.

I realized after posting the video that it was long and anticlimactic, but it's so peaceful watching their friendships.

Here's Stilty with his favorite ladies, who are extremely missed by their chicken and human friends: Ashley and Stilton at 9 weeks, peas in a pod.

Stilton was absolutely smitten with older woman Frida Bakawlo the One-Wattle Wonder. He spent months wooing her before she noticed him and was always so proud to walk around with her.

Maybe. But I prefer the build of my cross breed Janice over the build of my two heavyweights, Gin&Tonic.

Old breeds like Dutch and heritage crosses with a slender figure move more elegant, are much faster and are able to fly a lot higher than the ‘traditionally’ build hens who ‘waggle’. Both Gin and Tonic are definitely not fast athletes.

Oh, I realize this! I also love the shape of the game-type birds. Janice is lovely!

My post was a terrible pun on a phrase from a series of books about the “Number 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” set in Botswana, by Scottish writer Alexander McCall Smith. The protagonist, Mma. Ramotswe, is a woman from the countryside who is Traditionally Built (in her words) and frequently irritated by excessively slender and modern young women.

That was televised here some years back, and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the reminder and happy memories brought back!

Wonderful series of books. My Dad really enjoyed them when I got them for him. I think he managed to read them all before he died in his mid-90s.
I recognized the phrase but wasn’t sure you were quoting intentionally.
Thanks for the reminder.

It’s becoming very obvious that the Buff Orp and Barred Rock will be pretty massive when seen from behind, compared to the EE.

Orps are famous for going broody, and I almost want to see Buffy go broody (once!), just to see the weaponized fluff.

I don’t remember if I posted it here, but there’s a great comment on Reddit that broodies carry their anger in their feathers. 😁
