Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

A beautiful photo, but a scary situation! I hope the trenches helped getting some of that water away. Is this something usual where you live or was it exceptional weather conditions?
This is not usual at all. We are having much warmer temperatures than usual for this time of year and the snow and ice is melting too fast to soak into the ground. It's normal to have a lot of mud and maybe an inch of standing water.

Cat owners should be careful using Permethrin.
It seems that specie's liver is unable to synthesize many substances that are not harmful to others 😬. Off course Permethrin like sulfur are meant to kill insects so they are harmful to those. Keeping bees, both will not be used in my coop as a spray. I haven't found a powder I could use directly on the chickens here but I think it exists for cattle.
I keep bees too! I’ve always been leery of permethrin products for my chickens for that reason as well, since my hives are in the same area as the chicken run. MannaPro makes a product here in the US called Poultry Protector that helped me control a mite outbreak last year. It’s a spray on product, and you have to do several applications, but it was better than nothing.

There was a lot of flooding around here a few years ago for the same reason. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with it. Is your house ok?

Thanks, that's really helpful because even though the product is not available here, it seems it can be replicated very simply, the main active ingredient is easy to find and to use.
My hives are not next to the coop but some bees do hang around, they love the mint bush in front. Also last year a bumble bee colony nested in the coop. We're happy that the number of various species of pollinator insects has considerably improved since we have the bees, I don't want to risk causing them harm.

my top hen has suddenly started wheezing, both on the in breath and the out :( She seemed fine this morning; poop is normal, and she's still feisty enough to peck me for grabbing her out of the coop and bringing her in to try to assess her properly. She scoffed some mealworms with gusto, and her breathing has gone nearly silent now she's asleep. Any suggestions?
