Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I believe Shad has added to what I learned many years ago from Grandma then Dad. Leaning the rest of the story here .

A lot of knowledge has been forgotton, or found to be inconvenient. I learn't an incredible amount from the old school chicken keepers in Catalonia.

Thanks for the very informative post about feathering and heat/cold tolerance Shad. All makes a lot of sense to me, and prompts two tangentially related thoughts: 1. does anyone know when people started stuffing feathers in bags to make quilts/duvets and use them to keep warm 🤔, and 2. how on earth do you measure a chicken to produce a figure of 12 watts!?!? ⚡
I don't know but it wasn't chicken feather they used. Duck and Goose down was favourite I believe.
Chicken wattage has been measured many times. More recently with thermal imaging.

Pretty neat showing how the incompletely feathered chicks lose heat and the adult loses most of her heat through her face.

Wow. That is cool. Look how effective at keeping in the heat the down is.
Looks like chickens might get cold ears just like I do.
