Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I think I'm going broody for broodies.

sure enough she's sitting on the eggs.
It must be something in the air; I was feeling the same Shad, and out of the blue one of mine has flipped today too; I hope to get some Braekel eggs for her

Are the allotments legally open to any and all who might want to wander through?
I have tried to find this out without success. There is what is called common law in the UK and it hasn't been revised. Some of the laws are ridiculous, such as having to spend a certain amount of time practicing archery; a leftover from the eleventh century I imagine. Small holding and common land seem to come under common law in some cases.
The laws regarding trespass apply and in there somewhere is a clause regarding interfering with livestock and crop damage.

Well, guess what ? After that discussion some days ago about taking or leaving the eggs, I left Chipie's eggs untouched. There was four today. Tonight I'm not finding her anywhere ; sure enough she's sitting on the eggs.

Did I mention an inconvenient laying place ? She is literally buried in a hole she dug in the straw, in a corner of the coop, behind a wood bar. I can't reach her but my smaller hens can 😬 .

I sure wasn't expecting such a fast reaction. The farmers here breed those bantams solely to brood and raise chicks, but I thought she wasn't feeling safe enough.
In my experience bantams in general don't need much encouragement to go broody.

I've been thinking that when the new coop gets here and everyone has got used to it, I could salvage the existing main coop giving me three coops.
I can see myself getting into deep water.

I got there about half past six. There was still a tiny amount of feed left and more layers pellets in the bin.
I left at nine fifteen.
Very pleased with the progress I'm making with Henry. I managed to give him a proper inspection this evening. No fuss when I took him off the perch. He just sat in my hand with a resigned look on his face as I checked his rear end and his feet.
I did Matilda as well. No fuss from her either.

I have a bag of layers pellets being delivered tomorrow.
I've been looking for a better feed. I'm going to give this a try.
