Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

So turns out i won't have to get this scissorbeak chick euthanized. I had recently switched the little ones to a hanging feeder, and didn't notice she was unable to eat from that. She is in the infirmary tub with her one brother that has an injured leg. I put the old feeder in, and now she has a very full crop.

:wee

Still need to get the other one's leg checked out, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. My audi has somehow developed a massive coolant leak. Took two $23 jugs of coolant to figure that out.
I'm pleased to read you've found a way to ensure she gets some food down her.:love

:love You are probably a better healer for chickens Shadrach, as a vet for cats and dogs.
Can’t you earn a little on the side giving (non-medical) advice? You could ask for a 20 - 40 £ donation to buy some nice equipment and food for the allotment.
I'm not at all happy giving medical type advice even if I know what I would do if the chickens were under my care.
Also, people are terrible at taking all the advice. Often they just take a bit and often it's an all or nothing remedy. I've had quite a lot of that in the past.
If the talks go okay I may charge a small fee for those.

I was very naughty this evening and gave Henry a cuddle.
I was trying to hand feed him. The hens won't give him a chance if it's something nice. It was haddock, oats, chopped bread (Good Polish bakery down the road here that makes proper bread) and chopped fresh tomatoes this evening. Every time I put my hand down with some food in he would reach down to take a bit and get promptly barged out of the way by one of the hens.
Eventually I picked him up and fed him with my free hand. He wasn't at all bothered by it.

Is that Lima in the first photo? Whoever it is, she's looking great.

That's Dustin.:love
Well she looks in great health!

I've had problems with the hens the last two days. They were put off their food by extreme winds and rain.

I'll make them egg and salmon treat to fill up at lunch time. But other than that, what would you do?

Today the weather is calm so far, so I expect they'll go back to their usual feeding habits.

I imagine your hens are well fed in general and a few days off their feed won't do them nay harm.
Egg and Salmon is fine. I give fish to the sick generally.
I can only think of a couple of times chickens have gone off their food for a bit, once when the roof of their coop got blown off and the coop blown over. They were not at all impressed by that. And after the Husky attack that killed Ruffles.
I was never quite sure if they were grieving for Ruffles or just shaken up.

I replaced the metal sheets with chicken wire on the south and east sides of the coop to take advantage of the southeast summer winds. It's much more comfortable and I don't worry if I need to keep them penned up in the afternoon. the heat index is over 100F every day now. Next week we'll see 100 with a index of 110 or more.
