Please let her read the article on BYC . It's very detailed, with lots of clues on how to diagnose. (You said she was the smart one at home).
The first obvious thing that could be other than Marek is vitamin deficiency, have you looked into this ?

She linked me to that article on BYC. I didn't read though. And couldn't be a vitamin deficiency, as we've fed the same brand of starter feed to 5 generations of chickens now.

I have to say if the bird has a lame foot and it is deemed Mareks means it is in your coop .. get the bird tested please.

Sometimes they change the formula. Could be a susceptible bird.
But I think more than one bird would be showing symptoms if mareks

Not possible at this point in time. Earliest i can get to the vet is next tuesday, plus i can't justify to my wife spending that type of money on a bird i was planning to give away.
 
I would tend to agree.
Treat time recent as a few days ago. tax paid.
