Been busy as one armed bandit took 7 pages to catch up.
Did move 30 cinder blocks we bought the start of foundation of the new coop.
This is two older hens I still have my tax.

I know she can't fly up there but it's the first jump that has me puzzled. It's not like she's the most athletic chicken I own.​

She has got them trying to catch flies already, but they're too quick doing that for me to get a decent photo

Glad this was a false alert!
It's quite puzzling why a hen will suddenly decide that what used to be her favorite laying place will simply not do anymore.

Catching flies is a useful trick! I have to say that seeing all the mama hen teaches, I understand why Shadrach feels a chick raised in a brooder is lacking some foundation.
When and how do you intend to let them outside and meet the flock ? As I watch them running around every where I'm guessing the little pen where I keep mine will feel small and bare in just a few days.
I'm guessing if you're not giving news from Venka it's because there are none .

I understand why Shadrach feels a chick raised in a brooder is lacking some foundation.

It certainly helps but there has to be a lot of "nature vs nurture" inherent "knowledge". My initial 12 girls in 2012 had to figure out everything for themselves having never seen an adult chicken in their lives. The chicks I got in 2015 had it better with Zorra and Clemence to raise them.

I think they'll be strong enough to keep up with Eve by a week or so and I'll let them out then. In the meantime that patch is getting a thorough scarifying and we may have to shuffle the lot to new ground before then

Indeed, still no sign of Venka. She's never slept out before nor hidden her eggs, so I am increasingly pessimistic about her situation
