Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Found one of my roosters dead in the coop this morning. He hadn't been looking too good the last few weeks. Comb was purple half the time. He wasn't mating and letting a grandson handle it. Glad he went before winter because I was thinking he was one that needed to be culled.... but I wasn't looking forward to it.
He was one of the few with a name. "Lucky's son " from 2018.

His mom was Lucky, she survived a hawk attack at 16 wks and spent oct to may in the living room to in a parrot cage. She lived a couple years afterwards.
Sorry for your loss, it sounds like he was a special rooster to you. He had a good life which would never have happened if his mum hadn't been lucky.
sorry for your loss :hugs Sounds very similar to what happened to Phoenix; unlike Henry, he didn't get over whatever was making his comb tips darken. I think there was something genetic at work here too though, because of a clutch of 6 from the same breeder, 3 boys and 3 girls, all the boys have died with dark combs, aged between 9 weeks and 15 months, and all the girls are absolutely fine.
I'm sad to learn Phoenix didn't survive. He was a beautiful roo and he must be missed in the flock.
If it's genetics, I hope it stops with his children. Did you think about getting in touch with the breeder ?

Yesterday was a special day ‘World Animal day’. A day to give you’re pets some extra attention or a treat.
I also want to give my moulting chickens something extra now it’s getting colder and went to the pet shop in town.
Guess what; they sell large buckets with dried mealworms.

Party time :wee . 800 gams for almost 18 euro’s . 4x as much as the bags I bought last years (200g) . Should be enough for 2 winters in a row. Expiring date 2024.

I need to get my mealworm farm restarted.

They're not as expensive if you raise them yourself.

So sorry to hear about "Lucky".

His coloring was extraordinary.

Thanks; yes, he was magnificent in the spring. All his offspring are hybrids, so I am optimistic for their genes. No I didn't get in touch with the breeder, because her birds were only a generation or two from the foundation breeder she used in Catalonia, and I think rare breeds are particularly prone to genetic depression, especially in the male line.
I miss him a lot, but his passing has actually made life sweeter for grandad Sven, who has recovered from whatever was challenging him, and has stepped up to look after the youngsters again.

I can imagine it’s cheaper to raise my own if I do it properly. . . But I don’t think I like to spend time with raising beetles and worms. 🐞. 🐛 :sick
My job takes up quite some time and I rather spend my free time on doing nothing in particular , things that really need to be done and all kind of hobbies. Besides my salary is good enough to buy one bucket of dried mealworms every year.

Sorry for you’re loss. Nice you gave Lucy's son a beautiful life for about 4 years. ❤️
