Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Minus 21°C already and the winter just is about to begin! 🥶

Love your Yeti and his name! Had a Yeti myself once.
Yeah I'm not looking forward to the long winter ahead. Mostly because I feel bad for my chickens, cats and dogs. They all love it outside, but it's just way too cold to be out for long these days. 🥶🥶

I barely even recognize her. What an amazing transformation she has had.
It's great isn't it. I can't tell you how pleased I am. She was the ugliest, least feathered no hope sick list nomination there when I started and I juust fell in love with her. I have to look quite carefully now in order to pick her out from two others with similar markings.
While it's true that she got wormed, treated for mites and lice and got extra food (Haddock & scrambled egg mainly) it's getting out of that awful run that I believe has made the most difference, not just to her, but to them all.

If that is what you thought I meant, then I must have said it wrong.

I was trying to compare how much commercial food is eaten in the winter (more) and summer (less). The chickens were free ranging at all seasons. I was not trying to compare ranging chickens with confined ones at all.
I see. I misunderstood your post.

I'd say yes, because then there is a better chance that more will be able to adapt to whatever cataclysm comes along next, either to the jungle fowl's natural habitat or to all of us (thinking mass extinction event here). Flexibility and adaptability and a good dollop of luck seem to have been involved in most survival stories, and the more widely scattered a species is, and the more niches it can occupy, the better its chances. Or am I out of date with evolutionary thinking?
Nope, I think it's still the oddities that go forward under such circumstances.

If you refer to the ear tufts, not every rumpless Araucana has them and they are a lethal trait. So never pair two tufted together.
I know that, but muffs aren't an araucana trait. That's why I didn't think it was an araucana with those.
