I am with you. And yet I do appreciate Shad in his quest to learn the true soul of The Chicken.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being an idealist but most people who raise chickens aren't ~ or can't afford to be. My birds have benefited from Shad's insights in numerous ways but most wouldn't survive a day in a *natural* environment ~ the Campines being the exception but they are a breed that hasn't been meddled with much & I'm pretty sure Fayoumis would do well too. It would be irresponsible of me to suddenly turn my lot loose

I'm going to play devils advocate and hope y'all forgive me because of my pictures.

At least they're still using the hens. Even if it's for pet food. Even at that young, those birds arent going to be as tender as most people prefer, and they're tiny compared to what most people buy in the store. It could be worse, they could just be thrown away.

I agree with this. We have and will have for the forseeable future battery hens.
They could be sold for human consumption if people weren't used to the flavourless oversized supermarket type chickens and were prepared to change.
The vast majority of these hens are going to be killed anyway.

Have you fed your cat any food containing any meat or fish produce?

Yes and I also eat meat. I've tried being a vegetarian for some years but i became ill.

I'm hoping one day in the future that we can find others ways of getting the protein and nutrients we need too survive without using animal's as we do.

What about you, do you eat meat? If yes is it always free range?.

For now I only buy free range meat for myself which of course my animals share, so they are not always getting pet foods.

i would be far happier if animal food companies would came up with free range foods or even better some other alternative's

I've been trying too organise buying free range meat and locally grown foods too cook for my animal's but its it's really hard too organise all the time. I only have one supplier for meat and one for vegetables.

My wish is people will become a little more aware and less selfish and at least start to search out for free range at least.

Yes, I eat meat. Not much and I don't eat chicken here in the UK. I ate chicken in Catalonia because I knew exactly how they were raised.
Free range pork is available here in Bristol and beef.

Yes, I eat meat. Not much and I don't eat chicken here in the UK. I ate chicken in Catalonia because I knew exactly how they were raised.
Free range pork is available here in Bristol and beef.

My husband rolls his eyes because I refuse to eat meat or poultry if I dont know for sure it was raised outside humanely. I was vegan and had terrible problems when I tried it. We were at a friends house when they proudly announced the steak they grilled was from a grass-fed ETHICAL farm we knew of and I was so happy I could try it! Lol. We have 2 beef farms that we buy from, and 2 poultry farms, and I consider myself lucky to have those resources. Have been to their farms and approve of their way of raising them. I have literally skipped the main course of multiple holiday dinners because of it. We now buy the turkey for thanksgiving and give it to my in laws so I will eat it!

There is a chicken farmer some miles away, it's hard too get to and I don't have the freezer space that often.
I was totally surprised at the difference in his chicken. His chickens are free and older, so it's much tougher but I feel much better getting chicken from him, when I can afford it. He looks after his chickens really well

Lima damaged her throat when she was at the battery. I mentioned how the feathers were growing back white from her breast to and up her throat. Here she is with a very dirty neck.

We are lucky enough to raise our own beef and pork. We butcher cockerels, but not in any sort of volume, so I do supplement with grocery chicken. I aspire to raise and eat all of my own meat, but I don't much care for the butchering part

Sigh... One of these days I may be a true farmer.

I made a "birds of a feather" album for all my clique-y chickens I found 19 (some duplicates, because I've got to take 12 at a time) in a quick search of my photos.
