Just knowing that food is available and it's not being used is devastating.

Could they not be donated to a food bank?

He wasn't getting any better. He would often cry out in pain just trying to move around.

It’s such a waste to burry them.. Old chickens are great for soup or a stew. Also good animal feed.

Another thought on BY chickens and eating eggs.

Most people eat eggs from the shop and therefore industrial farm eggs. Most chickens who live on a commercial farms have a very poor life. They have not much ‘coop’ space and often no outside space at all. The best commercial farms for chickens are the organic and the Demeter ones. In the Netherlands these farmers need to provide about 0,15m2 coop space and 4m2 space outside for at least 8 h a day.

If a person has chickens in his backyard and provides a little more space than required for the organic label it’s an improvement to the life of chickens as a whole. Because it means ‘we’ need less commercial chickens in cramped housing.
Assumption : the total amount of eggs humanity needs is the same.

I suppose the table speaks for itself even if you don’t speak Dutch or you have other labels in you’re country.

I like to give every BYC hobbyist that provides more space for their chickens than the average chicken has in the farms the benefit of the doubt. And like to see it as a positive contribution to the life of chickens.

Why would they not clean and use the chicken for food?

There are so many children who are hungry.

There wouldn't be much to eat on them after running around the pastures and the trees all day every day of their lives.

Also I don't think there are many starving kids in Australia so the meat might have to be flown out?

I'm not saying the tiny bit of meat harvested from those few hens each season wouldn't be welcome somewhere in the world.

Mostly personal preference and lack of photos.

One of the reasons I like people to post pictures of their chickens on this thread, apart from the tax benefits mentioned earlier in the thread and the goodwill a chicken picture can generate even when the post itself may be contentious, is it gives us all some insight into how people keep their chickens and we can have a better understanding of their views on chicken keeping should they be different from ours. It can also be quite instructive when it comes to health problems to see a picture that might help explain a particular problem. We also get to know a little about the personalities of their chickens over time and an understanding of the level of experience they have in particular areas. We can also make assessments regarding peoples experience when giving, or receiving advice which given the wide range of opinions one finds on BYC, often based on little more than what someone has read, becomes important.

I like to believe that the contributors on this thread are genuine people, all trying to learn from each other. There is a wide range of experience here and a wide range of keeping arrangements despite the thread title.

While this is by no means an invitation thread many contributors who have not met on other threads introduce themselves before seeking, or giving advice. This to me is good manners on threads such as this. On the general forum threads it is not practical or necessary.

It would seem to me on what evidence I have seen is you can’t post any pictures of your chickens because you don’t have any. Nor can I find any references to any chicken you may have had, or cared for in the past.

I’ve read a number of your posts on various threads and nowhere can I find any reference to a personal incident relating to the advice you gave. I may have missed any posts that have.

There is a great deal of copy and paste advice given on BYC, much of it incorrect. I would rather try and avoid that on this thread.
