I think strawberries would be fine. Any kine fruit really. Mom will help introduce them to any new foods. Banana is one of my favorite foods to feed any of my animals.

I wonder if he is scolding them for wandering too far. I'm sure Shad has got some great thoughts on this roo behavior.
If it were me though- and I don't know a lot about your set up other than it is super beautiful and charming and I want to live there **deep sigh**
I'd probably toss him out and leave the ladies and mama in the safe space.

I don't know enough about the keeping arrangements, who mated with who etc etc to know anything useful.
Is Theo the chicks father? My appologies if you've covered this but I can't remember if you did.

Well. I obviously miss something... again lol. Good thing I paid my tax.

I was just answering the fruit question. My mom's have the babies sample many things but usually gobble most of it for themselves- always depending. Mostly depending on the age of chicks of course. My mom's stear them away from things she does not want them to have and yes, worms and meats are always terrific, agreed.

@ManueB I'm sorry to hear that about your boy. I hope Shad chimes in on this one. Interesting dilemma and learning opportunity. ♡

This is what I've found to be the case. If mum says it's okay the chicks will eat it.
It's a constant problem I find trying to take into account those who hatch in incubators, rear in broody coops until the chicks are feathered and then let the chicks out on to a run or natural ground.
Obviously the chick knows nothing about what is and what isn't good to eat in the natural environment. Hopefully, given how much chickens learn by observing other flock members disasters are averted mostly.

No, but fire is a major problem in the area I lived in.

Oh how my yard suffers under a good broody and one of the reasons I prefer to use an incubator to hatch and raise meal worms Broodys are RELENTLESS
I think my handraised chooks error on the side of caution. I am very proud of them. My current pullets are pretty worthless at finding bugs because I have not haken them on any hunts yet. But I did catch a few lizards to share with them yesterday and once they get the taste of a good lizard.

I always remain hopeful that they will peck enough young grass shoots so I won't have to mow

I have found that a confined broody does a fantastic job of scarifying that section of lawn while teaching foraging 101 to her clutch
