Surely if a chicken catches highly contagious, by the time a human notices, they've all got it.

Isolation does make sense in some cases but not for the permanent coop and run keepers when it comes to infectious diseases.
I'm fairly attentive and it can take me a couple of days to notice there may be something unexpected seriously wrong. Chickens have off days.
If one keeps multiple groups then isolating that group from the others and crossing ones fingers seems sensible.

Well, the vet just called a few minutes ago. Achilles tested positive for Marek's. She said she will call the state vet's office tomorrow to see if this is supposed to be a reported incident. Hope they don't show up trying to put down my entire flock.

I do hope it doesn't come to the worst.
It's a risk getting a necropsy done. I think for certain diseases here in the UK, if they find it there's a chance they'll want to destroy your chickens.
I don't beleive it has been like this for some of those contributors who have chickens testing positive though. Nobody tried to take their chickens away.
I now wouldn't send a chicken for a necropsy, at least not here in the UK.
It might be said, isn't that a bit irresponsible. Yep, I acknowledge this. I'm still not going to do it.
One has to close ones flock from there on.

Now Chippy and Pinecone are with Skeksis Jr and Sky Dancer. The sister was included with the ones we gave away. It's all a big mess.

It does but...
People new to chicken keeping who may view their chickens as pets are I think likely to put more effort and money into trying to make a sick hen well. I've done it and not just once (slow learner).
What experience has taught me is you have to let them go. That makes a difference to my attitude which may not be a good thing for the chicken.

Liking chickens is a good reason to keep them. Why must their existence be justified in terms of what they give?

I agree, but I could say I like tigers but that wouldn't justify me having them.

I was concerned that I didn't have enough land to provide a trio of chickens with an adequately interesting environment. They are not like my dogs which get to go with me on all sorts of wonderful expeditions and keep their minds enriched with all sorts of fun training. My tiny backyard is all the chickens would have and to even call it "free ranging" when they are out is ridiculous because there are people on BYC whose enclosed run is bigger than my whole property.

But Ribh and Shad's sister's method is doable for me, and I bow to Shad's much vaster experience that this is acceptable to give them the quality of life they deserve.

Now, I am very much anticipating the poultry show in July when I can connect with some breeders. I will probably end up with a bunch of eye candy nutters like Ribh's gang.

You should be able to see at the far end of the grass a lone rooster. He was twelve years old when I took this picture. The rooster (there have been hens for both in the past I gather) lives with an old man. If you are prepared to stand there long enough the old man will come out and tell you about his friend. The relationship seems to be based around the old man and the rooster swearing at each other when they meet. It goes something like this. The old man comes out of the house. The rooster sees him and charges at him stopping just short of the old man, leaning back his head and giving a loud crow. The old man tells the rooster where to go in language I'll pretend I didn't understand. Then they both go about their business.

This place is by the side of a road that leads to a busy industrial estate. Most days the chickens are out in the various vegetable plots. There is another bunch out and about at the side of the house.

I used to stop when I went by and talk to the roosters. I never found out how many roosters were there.

Semi rural. A friends place 5 minutes walk fro the village. The structure mid left where the post and rail is, is the chicken coop. There is no other fence

Hahaha no it doesn't fit every species and I apologise if my words gave you the impression i was constructing a rule instead of a special case
