Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Hen improving the rate of air change under her wings by increasing the air flow.
When it's cold they adjust the feathers to trap the air which gets warmer thus providing an insulated air layer of sorts.

The chickens body radiates heat. This heats the air next to their skin. Assuming the air temperature is lower than that of the chickens body, each change of air provides a slightly cooler sink. The old air reaches the same temp, more or less as the skin temp if it is trapped. A breeze gives a more regular air change.
Thank you. Helpful.
It was a serious question. I believe a chicken’s body temperature is around 41C/106F. My worry was that as temperatures approach that level they have no way to cool themselves and a fan won’t help.
I hope not to have to survive such temperatures myself let alone help my chickens through that but we seem to be heading in that direction.

If the ambient temperature reaches the chickens core temp they start dropping dead. Air flow in this case will help but not enough probably.

While I'm waiting for the temperature to drop...
Just one of the many pieces of misinformation about keeping chickens cool and heat tolerant chickens is the insistance that large combs, usually single uprights are better than other comb types when it comes to transfering heat to the environment. Just about every site I've looked at has these supposed guides on breeds that are heat tolerant.

So, what about these two? One might think that the rooster in picture 1 has the ideal comb type. But, in fact the rooster in picture 2 has a greater surface area of comb exposed because of all the bumps.
