Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

A few people asked me how I got on in the storm last night including C who sent me a text while I was still there. It seems the storm was worse than I thought.

Dodge the showers again today. I was lucky and stayed dry.
The water container in the coop run has had a couple of splits in it around the top. I took a plastic bowl to replace it. The bowl is only 14cm deep and holds 15Litres. The most I've seen this lot drink is about 10Litres.

One of the things I was hoping for was given decent perches they would all stop sleeping on the floor. I've been researching (well, more sortof reading)this topic and it seems that some Ex Battery hens never perch. I've been putting a couple of the floor sleepers on a perch at roost time. Most just hop straight off the perch but one stayed on tonight.

That's interesting. I wonder why. Are they too lean to be comfortable perching? If they remain floor sleepers, will they need deeper bedding?

Well, I had hoped to do away with bedding in all but the nest boxes. They tend to huddle together when it's cold. My dream of no coop floor bedding is currently on hold.

Nice is, or was, a wonderful place to live in for someone like me who enjoyed outdoor sports, had no kids and enough money to own a flat. However as a touristic destination I think it is way overrated. If you enjoy seaside tourism, the beaches are not very nice, all covered in pebbles, and the sea is dirty. If you're interested in culture and architecture the old town is nice but very small. I think it's only worth it if one takes the time to travel in all the small beautiful villages in the hills behind Nice where there are churches, museums and various sites of interest. Basically I would recommend going for the real thing : almost any place in Italy is a hundred times nicer for tourism 🤣. Especially if you like to eat.

I lived the 28 first years of my life in various suburbs of Paris and in Paris itself, and then spent two years in Lyon getting my degree in Library Science, before arriving in Nice. I'm a city girl that always dreamed of living in the mountains!
I think you owe tax for that because you're the one that got me rambling completely off topic 🤣.
Nice, brings all my memories back! I lived in Antibes (close to Nice) for three months in a summer of many many years ago. Perhaps the best three months of my life. I was young and fell in love ...

I thought the food was incredible. Every meal I had was great, but perhaps this was in contrast to the terrible food I had in the US right before.
