Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

The sad thing is, many people of that first generation who so embraced it as the wonder product that it seemed to be, suffered from diverticulitis in the later years, because eating it they didn't get enough fibre.
I can speak to this. My grandfather, a tough, burly man who lived jnto his 80s, had “Wonderbread” daily along with other convenience foods. He was in perfect health…except for diverticulitis which he suffered from the second half of his life.
But I do know that 'at least cost' will be part of the equation, and the long term outcomes won't be of interest: the timeframe will be set by whatever the regulatory bodies choose as their test period for new foods, and they will be under pressure to shorten it to a couple of years tops.
This is my concern as well.
I exposed a compost heap this morning and the flock wasted no time getting stuck in :p
What a fun day for the chickens! 😊

Cousin had this, last century, and they told her to avoid fiber....seeds and such.

I looked into the plant based meats when they first came out. Some were rated nutritionally as good as grass fed ground beef. Some were as bad as McDonald's . The price was similar to grass fed ground beef. I haven't tried it.

In fact I don't think actual vegetarians or vegans will be the market target.
I think you are right, even emotional vegetarians like my DD1 who doesn't want animals killed as opposed to those vegetarians who believe it is more healthy way to eat haven't eaten meat for so long the idea of meat from any source probably isn't appealing.

I’m leery of highly processed foods, as I think they fall short nutritionally compared to whole foods. Considering the plant filler that’s put in it to hold it together, I’m leaning more towards @Perris ’s view. That said, I’d be willing to try it, because I’m curious about how it tastes. BUT, I’d try it side by side with a comparable cut of pasture raised meat. Call me a foodie, but I like food that tastes good.

I'm a meataholic.

I get to the point sometimes that I'm craving red meat.

There are a few plant based meat substitues on the shelves here. I've tried a few. I used to use Quorn. There is a company that makes sausages that could be mistaken for a meat sausage if one tried.:p

I haven't been able to eat usual shop bought chicken for years. I assume this will be the taste and texture the cell grown chicken products the manufacturers will aim for.

I was late today. The main bus company in Bristol announced it was going to axe 1500 bus services due to lack of drivers; not to be confused with bus routes. It was all a bit of a mess today.
It stayed dry this afternoon but chilly at 7C.
The sick Legbar looked less sick today, ate some with the others, foraged a bit and drank lots of water.
