I bet the vet loved her.

I would do an MRI too.

-2C at the allotments. Two hours wondering if my fingers would ever work again. The drama rolls on. I go anyway and make sure they get out, fresh clean water, clean coop and go to roost with a full crop.
It's wait and see what happens.

Fret.

That is a nice picture of her Shad, and she is looking good.

Yes, I think it’s mostly because of getting chicks at hatcheries. The fatty livers may be my fault, since they only free range when supervised, which doesn’t happen during the work week in winter (it is dark when I get home and even sometimes when I leave in the morning.) At least two and likely three having cancer makes me wonder if there us something in the environment, but I have ready many times over that there is high incidence of cancer in high production birds and I think hatcheries breed them to be just that.

I would like to continue caring for chickens throughout my lifetime, nut would prefer to stop supporti g the hatchety industry. I’m only on 2/3 of an acre, so not set up for multiple roosters (so not set up for them to hatch their own, either). Someday I might rescue, as well. I just don’t know. I’d like a few chicks next year, but would need to research breeders who provide good conditions and I don’t think there is much of that in California.
Thats 5x the size of my plot! If my neighbours didn’t complain about the noise I could have one bantam rooster with my bantam flock (Dutch and bantam RIR are about 1/4 - 1/3 of normal size chickens).

I imagine the Dutch people have a long tradition of keeping backyard chickens. With maintaining heritage breeds, selling surplus chicks and fertilised eggs to people. Within 20 km there are many hobby breeders who sell chicks, chickens and eggs. But we do have a restrictions bc of the avian flu. It’s not allowed to trade freely.

@no fly zone So glad to hear Skeksis had a good diagnosis! Good luck in NJ, we have some friends in Bergen Co.

@Shadrach its been cold here too, low tonight of -9C (I googled to see what it would be as it is 16F). I was home with DS the last few days (battling a cold so no school), & although I opened the door from the run to the garden for the girls, they took one look at the snow and refused to come out. I sat in the run with them for 20 minute increments which was about all I could handle…so cold! My Welsummer did jump on my lap which warmed me a bit lol.

@BDutch I wish there was more non-hatchery availability here also. There are a few local breeders, but none sell sexed birds. If my neighborhood allowed roosters I would try English Orpingtons, as there is a breeder nearby!
