how's this as an ad for roos? (snapped through a window this morning, so apologies for awful quality). Chirk in the centre, Amadeo and Killay on point, and Fforest bringing up the rear; hens neatly collected in the middle. They don't normally bunch this close and they're alert but not alarmed; I've no idea what they heard/saw to cause this.

I love waking up to multiple roosters sounds.

I enjoy hearing roosters crowing, though I have hearing loss and can’t hear them crowing inside the house unless I’m listening carefully and they’re close to a window. Or if the window is open. My husband is a light sleeper and doesn’t have the same feelings I do.

So do you mean that the coop that was sold for ten is suited for five ?

I think a lot of prefab coops are like this - they advertise a capacity that may work in theory but the designers/marketers probably have little experience with chickens. In theory, you need 1 ft/30 cm per chicken of roost space, because that’s how much room they physically take up on a roosting bar. In reality, you want more than that because not everyone gets along and you need space between some chickens in order for everyone to feel comfortable roosting together. Otherwise you end up with chickens sleeping in nesting boxes and elsewhere. Then there’s ventilation considerations - I’ve yet to see a prefab coop that was adequately ventilated for the number of chickens it can supposedly house.

It depends on how one keeps chickens.
If they were free rangers (dawn till dusk) then I would let ten roost in it.
Coop and run style, then four.
Five in at the moment and they look comfortable, the coop ventilation works with that amount.

I'm not sure I understand if you are pointing out C. total lack of knowledge, or that they will listen and eventually learn from what you tell them ?

I'm hoping they will learn rather than take the view that they are just chickens and they don't need to know any more than they do.

Wet, but not quite so windy and close to 10C. I sat in the run while Henry and his hens wandered in and out of the new coop as the bands of rain came and went. New waterproof trousers are doing well.

I was healthy enough just in time for our new year vacation in the south of Portugal! One week withouth chickens but with lots of ornamental decorations! . !

I’ve been wondering the same.

Sorry for the long response - I love her and think she is very pretty so I like showing her off! She is huge and very feisty.
As a chick she had a vitamin B2 deficiency and became paralysed but eventually with supplements and lots of physical therapy (including a plastic boot) she made a full recovery.
I am not good with breeds, so take everything I say with a big pinch of salt! The chap I got her from breeds Welbars and she is one of those. As far as I can tell they are just like Welsummers. He said she will likely lay a spotted egg. I am not convinced she is going to lay any kind of egg - she seems to have plenty of other things to do with her time!
