Going back to chickens, I have a question. I have a late molter in my flock. She began about three weeks ago and now she is fully molting. I also had an early molt from a hen that started in August and finished at the beginning of October. They are the same age and both ex-batts, so I'm a bit puzzled.

Last year they mostly did not molt during autumn and winter.Is it usual that there should be such a difference between individual hens that are undergoing the same conditions ? My hen Blanche, who is molting now, suffered from a hawk attack at Christmas and I'm wondering if her molt is stress induced.

More guns than people here still. I have over a half dozen assorted rifles, shotgun and handguns.
When I was a kid it was common to bring guns to school during hunting season. Lean them up in a corner until school was done. Hunt on the way home. Now the kids hunt each other instead of rabbit or squirrel.

Sad the moral decay of society. I miss the old days.

invasion of other peoples is a different thing entirely. The Athenians were citizens and soldiers, bearing their own arms against foreign entities, but not in their own public spaces. They invented democracy, trial by jury, and much else besides. And repelled a vastly larger Persian conscript army at Marathon etc.

Sorry for the off-topic. I have a family member who works on a task force to take illegal guns off the streets, and it is amazing how many illegal firearms are in surrounding communities. I have no problem with folks owning firearms legally. I wish there was a way to prevent more illegal ones from coming in.

IDK. Uvalde and Jan 6 come to mind. Embarrassing.

I am talking about the majority of murders in the US. Not a tragic random act like a mass shooting. Criminals mugging people at gun point. Gang violence. Robbery with a murder. Breaking & entering with a gun. Most gangs in the United States acquire their guns on the black market, which are illegal guns brought into the country. Until there is a way to stop them from being brought in, and to somehow find and confiscate any that are already here, I don’t think it is a wise idea to ban legal firearms. I don’t know what crime is like in Hawaii, but many pockets of urban areas in the continental US have turned into war zones with rival gangs and innocent victims of their crimes.

Edit: I don’t want to derail the thread, but thought it important to bring up my experience in working in a city with youth. Illegal guns are a huge problem, and people owning a legal firearm often do because the crime rate has spiked so high. I could tell stories…one of a young girl who woke up with a man who went through her window when she was asleep. Her father went out and applied for a legal handgun the next day. I am in no way what I would consider an advocate of guns, however I don’t think it fair to tell people here they cannot or should not own one if their community is not safe (whether because of human crimes or wild animals).

if mass shooting were random, they would occur elsewhere with the same sort of frequency as they do in the US. They don't.
