Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Don't see them much - though these reusable ones that have taken over are shopping bags I guess.
I have my grandmother's old string bag - I remember her using it - but I can't seem to grasp how to not lose small items through the spaces in the mesh - so instead it houses the plastic bags ready to reuse.
To be fully transparent I only use the old plastic bags as back up or overflow with groceries. I have a canvas bag and in the US I have to drive to a grocery store and I don't use a bag at all - I take the trolley to my car and load stuff into the rich assortment of cardboard boxes that live in the back of the car (and possibly breed there too).
Of course you are not driving to buy groceries. Here in the US I have no choice.
Can I join the group of you all who breed cardboard boxes? I have a lot of them.

I compost mine!

Do you get cash back for recycling bottles and cans? In California we did.
I have heard they hand out paper straws in plastic wrappers in Huntington Beach... Explain that to me.
In CA you had to pay the grocery store for bags but can get a single use plastic bag from any other store that doesn't sell groceries.
We pay 10 cts for each glass beer bottle (25-33 cl,) small plastic bottles (500 ml) and aluminium beer cans (300 - 500 ml) . For large plastic bottles (1- 2 liter), we pay 25 ct. The bottles and cans have a barcode for this. For beer and grocery crates the recycle fee is about 2 - 5 euro’s.
If you bring it back to the grocery shop you get a refund of the same amount.

The paper straws are probably packed in plastic in the grocery store. Like 100 in one But the bars, take aways and restaurants only use the single/double paper straws. People say, you have to drink quick because the papers straws get week very quick. The straws from straw are much better.

Every store , including fashion or whatever stores are not allowed to give away plastic bags. And the price must be a normal price. At least 25ct for a simple bag or 50 ct for a bigger more sturdy bag. In general these bags are not refundable. Most fashion and beauty shops pack the goodies in paper bags to avoid discussions.

People I know say they go through four or five straws for one drink when a plastic lasts for who knows how many.
I would say just get one plastic straw and that's it. No need for the paper one if you ever eat out.

Just something I like to share. The cultivation of lilies was twice in the news today]
1 Unrest at lily growers after ban on use pesticides in Drenthe-NL.
The article is about the poisonous lily cultivation. There is proof people get Parkinson’s and other neural disease’s from the poisonous mix of herbicides and pesticides. Therefore the judge prohibited the use of these chemicals.

2 How ex-bats contribute to the lily cultivation without poisons.

The ex-bats are perfect in greenhouse lily cultivation for the control of nematodes. The ex bats come from ‘Save a laying hen’ and have a wonderful life after the factory farming conditions. + The workers get free eggs at the end of the day.
