Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

thanks LE - now established we have 4.

Janeka was holding on for one that quit early, and the sixth was only about half out of the shell before succumbing to something (since 2 days ago I guess from the smell - I think that's what finally got Janeka to give up on the one which, it turned out, was never going to hatch). All four looking good at the moment. And staying in the coop very wisely given the weather.

Congratulations Janeka. Who is the father Perris?

Grey and damp. Two and a half hours today. It started to rain again as I walked to the train station.
Fret isn't eating enough. This is a first for me. Every other broody hen I've known seems to know that if there is food available when they get off the nest they should eat all they can stuff in their crop. Not Fret.:( She's not going to starve because I'm feeding her while she's on the nest; not something I'm keen on doing and in other circumstances I would be considering confiscating the eggs at this stage.
Fret messing about looking for I don't know what instead of eating.

On her way back to her nest she got on the roost bar and kicked off with a very loud and demanding escort call. Henry arrived, got on the roost bar beside her and peace was restored. No there wasn't any dancing. No he didn't try to mate with her. No she hadn't laid an egg. Once Fret had gone back to her nest Henry settled down just outside the run for a while. Carbon came onto the allotments with me.

Look what I found doing a bit of weeding.

I left one out for Henry and Carbon.

Plums anyone

I gave Henry one of the plums I picked. I picked 20.

Tomatoes growing but still not going red. I've trimmed off most of the non fruit bearing branches. I may have to cut off the remaining branches with flowers on given how late in the season it is.

Onions drying in the green house. I still have another row to pull.

I need at least 3 different emojis as a reaction to this post.
🤔😢🤣👍

Do you think Fret is a bit stupid when it comes to the hatching proces?
And why? Is it because she has never learned from an auntie? Or because she is a laying hybrid? Or bc she is named after a predator.
