Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

good obs; typically I don't see clouds of dust while they're actually dustbathing, but only when they shake on exit, as you say. It's hard to imagine they can avoid breathing while dustbathing, especially given the length of time some of them spend on it!
Bernie and Babs (master dust bathers) create some clouds of dust as they start. Then they seem to almost completely bury themselves and there is no dust while they lie submerged and writhe around essentially underground.
Then they emerge and I try to get as far away as I can!
Never heard them cough/sneeze during the dusty phases.

yes that happens here too. And a lot of wing action seems to throw up sand-sized particles rather than dust. On the other hand, the shake out afterwards shows that dust was being trapped and accumulating within the plumage - I'm reminded of this photo of Maria leaving a dustbath in the ashes of a bonfire

no dust round the head, note.

Further to https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...rescued-chickens-thread.1502267/post-27200364 , and wondering whether Amadeo knows it, Nicol observes notes (p.104) that

"... in junglefowl, several males are attached to each small group of females, remaining in close proximity and engaging in social encounters. Dominant males attain more matings, and DNA fingerprinting reveals that there is usually a high correlation between mating frequency and paternity… as a cockerel does not recognize its own offspring (Ligon and Zwartjes 1995), his mating success is the best guide the male bird has to his own paternity.”

edited for clarification :p

Put a toy model car/ skyscraper in this picture and we have King Kong!

I mentioned that I was very much in favour of self expression. After all, if one doesn't let people express themselves in a manner of their choosing one may never find out just how collossally vacuous and unpleasant people are.
So. Very. True.

You be you. It's fine by me. But if you're "collossally vacuous and unpleasant" (excellent phrase, BTW), I don't care what other attributes we may have in common, I will try to smile and exit the conversation as soon as possible.
