Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

The breaking news is that Punxutawny Phil didn't see his shadow this morning, so he's in agreement with candlemas. Early spring it is. Wonder if they agree every year.
And it is here that I learn Candlemas and Groundhog day are the same thing.
How could I get this old and not realize that?!

Oh ground hogs are usually breaking hibernation around now because it's breeding season.
We all know how moody hormonal animals are. Miracle more people aren't bit.

I think most countries have some thing about winter ending on this day.

I know parts with Celtic influence have a mythical woman that decides. If she wants to have a longer winter she has it sunny so she can gather more firewood to last the winter.

Curiously, speaking from a said Celtic part, this is news to me!

Isn't Celtic and Gaelic similar?

"Imbolc was also a time of weather divination. Gaelic legend has it that on this day the Cailleach, the ruler of the dark side of the year, would gather her firewood for the remainder of winter. If she decided to make it a long winter she would make the day warm and sunny so that she could gather as much wood as possible.
If it was a cloudy day, that means we were going to have a short winter and spring is right around the corner. "

They're both connected if you go back far enough. These days Gaelic is associated with Irish and Scottish, while Welsh is closer to Breton; linguistically they've gone different routes since at least a few thousand years ago I think.
