Writing an article on a reasearch topic that is accessible to the majority of BYC readers I find quite difficult. No worries. I probably won't bother posting the other articles I've written of a similar nature here on BYC.

I certainly appreciate your effort, and would enjoy reading any others you post. I like reading material that makes my brain work and question what I think I "know."

I've edited the paragraph Perris mentioned above. I hope it's a bit clearer now that I am talking about feed provided by the keeper rather than forage.


"For keepers who range for a couple of hours a day assessing the nutritional intake from forage is almost impossible given the diversity of soil conditions and vegetation possible. Most keepers will supply some form of supplementary feed to compensate for poor forage conditions and/or limited foraging time. Keepers falling into the part ranging category should also take into account nutrition reduction due to the addition of water if feeding mashes or fermented grains if they wish to ensure their chickens get a particular amount of nutrition from the supplementary commercial/supplied feed."

It is very hard to write a clear and concise article that conveys the fruit of a real research project. (Who was it who apologised for writing a long letter because they didn't have time to write a short one? I can't remember. But I digress...) You have so much knowledge and wisdom to contribute to benefit all of us who live with and care for chickens, it would indeed be a shame to keep that to yourself, as @RoyalChick says. What we used to do in academia was circulate drafts to people who would read it carefully and find the gaps, flaws, oversights, slips and misses who we called critical friends, and they would enable us to revisit and revise the text before sending it off for inspection by journal editors and referees, who would then do the same coming at it from other perspectives and trajectories, before it was actually published and landed on the shelf to be read by anyone who wished. It's a very useful service friends can provide for one another. I would be happy to serve in such a capacity for you and your articles in draft.

Funnily enough I was going to ask you to proof read for me but thought it was a bit of an imposition and instead I asked a couple of friends in my blog group to do it.

I too would be willing to read drafts. I don’t have as much chicken experience as the rest of you, but I am reasonably qualified in physiology and in reading scientific papers.

I did have some reservations about publishing the article here on BYC.
I used weight because feed is usually measured by weight and I had hoped that not having to make the conversions from weight to volume would make the article easier to understand.

I enjoy reading your articles and thoughts. That's the whole reason I'm following this thread.
Before I started following I thought ex bats were for soup. Although I had already seen the heritage hens I bought were going to have a retirement home instead of soup.

Yes the little envelope. And yes you can attach files, and links to Google docs or equivalent. Or you can just use it to trade email addresses and phone numbers privately.
