Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

It got wet here. The chooks decided a tree was the most logical thing to hide under instead of their coop.
It's been very rare that I've seen chickens return unless it's been about egg laying. I build all full sized coops around 50 cm off the ground and the chickens tend to shelter under that.

Turkey hen has hatched 3 chicken chicks a couple weeks ago and insists on gathering more eggs. Chicks are doing well so I'll see how it plays out. Taking eggs away from a turkey is dangerous and I am worried a chick would get injured.
She looks like she's daring you to try it!

Mine only like going in when there is a very desirable food involved. As soon as I shut the coop door a ton of insults gets hurled in my general direction until I am gone.

Been there. Done that. Got the teashirt.

It rained this morning but by the time I left the flat to go to the field it had stopped and the rest of the afternoon stayed dry.

Mow is making her place as an adult hen in the tribe. Carbon and Fret have taken this onboard and Mow's life has become a lot easier. She's quite good with the chicks. She'll let them eat with her and doens't harrass them out foraging. It was Mow on the spade when I was digging this afternoon, not Carbon. Mow also expects Fret and Carbon to respect her turn in the treat handing out, be that by me, or Henry.

Roosting time was a little better today. One of the grey chicks slipped in before the rest and got on the rosst bar Mow roosts on, then the other grey chick joined her after a few failed attempts to get on the roost bar with Fret.
The rescue chick is just a mess at roost time and I had to stop it coming back out once it had gone in. There were three on the roost bar when I looked in last.
