Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Tax for lurking for a while. I haven't posted cause my pictures are so bad, but but just wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear that Henry is failing. I know he's older and can't last forever, but he will be missed. Some shots of my 3 new girls that I adopted from a rescue group after Willa and Nevada both passed this summer. Edith, speckled sussex, Barbara ( aka Barbie) light sussex, and Maeve, EE.

The water main that runs through our garden has sprung a leak (again). The chickens are enjoying its effect hugely (lots of bugs coming to surface to avoid drowning), but it's under one of my and the chickens' favourite plants, and digging to fix the leak will probably kill it :( - if it doesn't drown it first

Fun days for the chickens. 😄

Is that the pipe from the water company?
In that case Im sure the water company would like to know so they can fix it.

If it is beyond your water meter, its going to cost a lot of money if you don’t fix it after the next water-check. (My MIL had this once) And the hole only gets bigger over time if you do nothing.

What kind of plant is it? A laurel? Most plants have a good position to survive if most roots can be kept. Prune it as much as the roots have been damaged/cut. If you have to take it out, take as much of its roots as possible and replant it with very little branches and leaves.

yes; I notified them as soon as I spotted it. They sent an inspector already. He said yes they'll fix it. Then the lady who phoned to say when, said that they have to give their contactors 4 working days' notice, so they won't be here to fix it until its been running for a week essentially :th There is no issue with water shortages in Wales - far too much rain here for that! - but I still think this is a poor show. How much soil will wash down the hill in that time?

Thanks; I have assumed responsibility for cutting back enough above ground level to make them enough space to dig their hole (it was like someone dug a grave last time!), and I've already found one ground-laying branch that has roots, so I'm hopeful that at least half the plant will survive, and I might get some cuttings as well as one or two rooted branches to put elsewhere.

It's the choisya, Mexican orange blossom, and it's just about to burst into magnificent flower and wonderful odour. Sod's law. This was it last year.

@RoyalChick are you letting Tassels sit on some of her lovely taupe-coloured eggs? or would they be infertile? (you have no roo if I remember aright). Or purchased hatching eggs? or do you refrain because of Mareks or other reason? If the latter, do you break her or just wait till she tires of it herself?
(sorry, didn't mean to come over like the Spanish Inquisition  )

That is really odd, so they just let the water flood everything out no matter what the damage it may cause and is that break causing an interruption of water service to anyone else?? Also, is that on their side of the meter or is it costing you money? I am pretty sure, here, if the break was on the water companies side of the meter, they would fix it right away, but if it were our side of the meter, they would drag their feet and let the profits skyrocket. (except, I do know where the main shut off is at the meter. LOL

it's a relatively small mains, with relatively small flow, and it is a leak not a break. Not like a fire hydrant been knocked off or suchlike in the movies :D

the pressure has dropped downside of it, but they still have water
is it costing you money
no. We are not metered, or rather, we are not billed according to use. I know the water company have a meter along the pipe at various points, but we're on flat rate billing still out here in the sticks. The reason the pipe is leaking is because it was a temporary fix around the time of WWII. I think the life expectancy was about 20 years. And here we are 75 years later... it is made of bituminised paper. Amazing it still works at all.

We had a leak in the back wall of our church. After a lot of hunting, Maintenance Guy found that a supply line to a sink had been "capped" when the sink was removed, and the cap had let go.

The "cap" was duct tape. It had held for 15 years, so I guess that's something.
