Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

So it was on the wall of ?Mary, Queen of Scots’ apartment, meaning second half of 16th century then? (Why yes, I Googled.🤓) Were there chickens as actual chickens at that time in China?

I don’t know when jungle fowl and chickens became recognizably different at various locations.
The apartments are named after her, but it's 18th cent decoration.

There was quite a bit of discussion about the relative importance of different varieties of jungle fowl in the evolution of modern chickens a long way back on this thread, but if I remember aright it was very text-based, and I don't remember any historic illustrations being brought into the frame.

I vaguely remember reading that as well, although I’d forgotten that it was this thread.

I wonder if jungle fowl type breeds (close to the ancestral form) were common in East Asia at this time. Also, maybe the artist was trying to imitate a modern chicken from a description or other source?

Kinda flinging things against the wall here! :p It would be fun to do an online art history dig to see if there are other Asian works from the period depicting chickens.

But otherwise, I got nuthin’. All I can say is it’s a funny-looking chicken, but pretty!

Romans had chickens thousands of years ago. They came from China before that. Either China or India had them domesticated 6k or so yrs ago

though there has been some discussion of wallpapers :p , no-one has yet hazarded a guess on the chicken or jungle fowl question, so perhaps I'd better start :) . I think it's a chicken, because though it has very dark legs and slim body, its body posture is about 45 degrees (jungle fowl typically are more horizontal I read) and its hackles appear more full than those on jungle fowl photos I've seen. But it's a far from convincing case, which is why I asked what the rest of you think. Any advances on my effort?
Neither picture looks right for jungle fowl but they may have been painted by someone unfamiliar with chickens or jungle fowl or be a particular stylistic way of portraying them maybe?

It seems like the photos of the red jungle hen look very like the figure in the wallpaper, but I’ve searched several sites for G. G. spaedicus, and none have combs or wattles. But those fan tails (don’t know what you’d call them X) look so similar!

I'm still using a Nokia I bought in 2009 :p

It's called dumb, but for someone who just wants a mobile phone, I think it's brilliant. Demonstrably robust, costs next to nothing on PAYG, battery lasts about two weeks if I forget to turn it off (and lasts months if I remember to turn it off), and untrackable. What's not to like? I do computer stuff on a desktop, where for me is where it belongs.
I'm curious, do you still have 3G over there? My Dad used a Palm Treo 650 (I believe) up until 2020 when they shut off the 3G.
