Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I’m adding shrimp shells to the list of bizarre things that chickens eat.

I made jambalaya for a late Juneteenth meal, and the girls were quite happy with the tail shells. (The shrimp were already peeled except for the tails.)

I can verify that chickens seem unbothered by spiciness, because after the Cajun seasoning, Tabasco, white pepper, and something else I’ve forgotten, I’m dyin’ here. 🥵🔥🥵

I guess since shrimp (and lobster and crabs and others) are really just sea bugs, something I try hard to forget, this shouldn’t be surprising.

I'm going to believe Fret has done with this period of broodiness. She was out of the coop when I arrived and went out on to the field with the others. I'm relieved. She's not limping. She's a bit underweight and still distracted.
Here she is bathing my onions in dust.

Mow on her evening pre roost bug hunt. Mow is the most adventurous forager of the four. She knows that late evening is a good time to hunt for spiders. She sees some really tiny ones.

Whew, so happy that’s in the rearview mirror!

Which reminds me...a large centipede/millipede got slurped up by one of the hens. Blech.

Good.

If one of the others went broody would you get them some eggs to set?

Hopefully Fret won't decide to brood again this year, but if she does blame my Agathae. She says that broodiness is life. She's been telling Fret about ignoring attempts to break her.

Agathae has been busy. I have 10 chickens that have gone broody so far.
