It's tradition to have a "butterbird" here for buffs!I wanted to name our Buff Orpington “Butterball” until the family shouted me down.![]()
Handsome fellas!Aberglasny, Erddig, Nefyn and Sully are 1 today![]()
Nefyn was a scrawny teen-looking cockerel for most of that time, but recently he's really filled out, and now resembles closely his brother/ cousin/ dad/ uncle/ some other close but 9 month older relative Gwynedd (on the left here), except N has white shanks and G has slate. They both resemble dad/uncle/grandad Killay, bar their single v his P comb. If the current generation of chicks produces another male like this, once they get their combs and adult plumage, I wonder if it counts as a new landrace? Anyone know how many generations are required to call a phenotype 'fixed'? View attachment 4158179
Erddig meanwhile has the red jungle fowl look inherited ultimately from Phoenix, and shared by Tintern, except E has green shanks while T has slate. View attachment 4158180
I'll try to get some nice photos of thegirlshens later; they're laying atm.
We give ours electrolytes in their water when it is hot, refresh the water multiple times a day and wet the ground so that it is cooling as it evaporates.I have a tray I can set out, hopefully they won't be offended by a turkey roasting tray...
I live in a place with cold long winters so I got mostly heavy bodied birds, not thinking about how hot our summers have been getting recently. Lots of them are panting and laying down, but Breezy is the only one who looks to be suffering badly.
