Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Things are going well here. Navy moved her kids to one of the low coops to sleep, which is a relief.

They were not happy with me bringing in the garbage bin, they were having fun in the spot where it sits.

A squirrel left this half eaten...cherry? Plum? In our garage. I don't know if we have a tree nearby or not.

The Elven bunch are now two weeks old.

They are now spending most of their time outside, learning so many lessons each day. Their individual personalities are starting to shine, and they have started getting a bit autonomous, it’s been a privilege getting to know them and seeing them interact with the world. Mum is as fierce as ever, so there haven’t been any problems securing the best forage spots on the property.

The bunch have made friends with the local sparrow family that nest on the trees above the coop, and come down to the rest of the property to forage for seeds and other bits of food dropped by me as I top up any feeders.

They have pretty much mastered the art of using natural cover. Each morning when I open the coop door and they come out, the chicks make a run for the nearest plant cover, and then follow mum from the safety of the underbrush. When mum finds a good spot, she too joins the chicks in the plants, and for the rest of the day it’s like they were never there.

Only in the afternoon, about an hour earlier than the rest, you can see Galadriel out in the open with a bunch of fluttering chicks behind her, heading towards the coop to spend the night.

Here they were snacking on one of the apples fallen from the apple tree above
