Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Wonderful update Royal!
So glad for you it all worked out perfectly (so far?) . Are you still worried about the Marek?
We are just now in the period when Marek’s is most likely to strike down the Littles.
The scientific data says I should expect to lose 20% based on the timing between vaccination and exposure to the virus.
That would be one chick.
But the scientific studies are based on giving a bolus, and presumably ‘large’ dose of virus. I took steps to reduce the load of virus they were exposed to by creating a clean brooder and dusting off Tassels before popping her in there.
At this point I just have to hope for the best.
My new uncertainty is that one of the supposedly all female chicks is looking like a cockerel. I still have to get my mind around that!

You're still in the window for either way....and the most recent pics say cockerel, pullet, cockerel, pullet so....

As I get older and lose weight (which is a good thing) I am very focused on building and maintaining muscle strength so that I can remain as independent and mobile as possible for as long as possible.
I have been told squats are a good thing to do and so I try to do some when the opportunity arises.
What better time than when you spot little Chicklets sunbathing in a low down and difficult to access part of the Chicken Palace?
I think Tassels is actually just extremely puzzled (probably amused) by my ‘working out’ in the Chicken Palace, but why not?!
I am also supposed to do planks (TBH I cannot yet do them flat - without a low bench or step), but the Chicken Palace seems like a less amenable place for those.
I started doing downward dog, worked to add planks and then added upward dog. This took several years of almost every day.

While a countdown is fun, we are not talking about a rocket launch here. For starters, I have never handled Glais, so I must first catch him, and that may not work when I try it; and if it doesn't, and I spook him instead, it could be set back a while. I already have 8 roosting out now, and if he joins them it'll get even trickier.

So, so jealous of your apples. PROPER apples (not the shite they sell in supermarkets) are my favourite thing ever - I used to get enough for free through orchard and gardening jobs when I lived down south that I could eat several every day for almost half the year. Now instead of visiting family for Christmas, I go down when Egremont Russets are at their best and fill a 90L rucksack to take back with me.

In my experience, if you happen to know someone with a fruit tree of any type you are gifted several bag-fulls of their surplus if you should chance to meet them at harvest time :p. I am currently grateful for some apples and some plums :love.
