Two and a half hours today. Mostly sunny at 17C high. It was 11C when we went home. One of the field members helped me clear away the rest of the fallen tree.

When I unlocked the coop run gate only mow was ready to go out, Sylph was in one of the nest boxes. At the prospect of getting fed, Sylph decided to come out and the egg could wait. She started looking for an outside nest! I had to tail grab her and put her in a nest box in the coop. She stayed there and laid her egg. She's not tried to lay outside in the past.

Glais will put an end to such nonsense! ;)

Most roosters here do the exact opposite:p.

Probably because their interest is in pleasing their hen and keeping the eggs hidden ;) .
I don’t often give credit to Big Red about his good behaviour with the hens, but he’s the first rooster to do nest searching. Tying this theme with learnt behaviour, Kolovos saw him do it and quickly stole his technique, taking it even further.

Lady Gaga was also rather exceptional at nest recommendations (remember this nest

?), but he didn’t come until a few years later
