Sitting on my hands here to avoid bringing Scots into the language chat...

on the two Englishes (?? Englishs looks worse so I'll go with the -es plural) I found this, which might amuse
https://stroppyeditor.wordpress.com...-this-word-back-and-the-uk-probably-will-too/

It's quite long, so for those with TLDR inclinations, here's a short quote from quite a long way in :D
"I don’t think any British usage guide has yet endorsed gotten, and for the moment that seems fair – although the reason has changed. A century ago, the word would have seemed affectedly archaic (Henry Fowler’s judgement in 1926); today, the risk is that it comes across as affectedly American. How easily we forget our history."
That was a very interesting read. Still, for ‘We have gotten ten thousand dollars for laboratory equipment,’ means that we have obtained or acquired this particular sum of money.”

I would have stated that 'We have received ten thousand dollars for laboratory equipment.'

But leave it to us to be contrary by bringing back words that the Brits have deemed obsolete.. "And why shouldn’t we Brits use it? As Marckwardt and Bernstein said, and as millions of Americans have found, it’s useful. And it’s a part of our heritage that the US is helping us to recover. But I may be too set in my ways to start using it myself." and I agree with the author, I may be too set my ways to start using it myself. 🙃

Favourite expression, doomscrolling.
This is why I limit my use of other social media platforms, refuse to watch the news and spend most of my non-work time watching chickens and turkeys, reading about chickens and turkeys or reading a good murder/suspense book. (real paper book.)

Personally, language is fascinating! Might be why I'm so willing to sit and watch the chickens (and them with the kitten, and the kitten with the tom and the dog). There's language there, too....including body language, and seeing the cross language interactions....

Bird tax. Titled by @RoyalChick favorite term for this.

And pics of each of the feathered, moulty guys here. Pardon the blurs on the young ones. It was breakfast time and that's too important to hold still for a quick pose.
