Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Two hours this afternoon. It felt cold. It was windy and it rained a bit. The picture tells the story. I'm sitting inside the coop extension with Glais, Mow and Sylph.

We did get out despite the weather.

Checking for the remains of the half can of tuna I took them.

Things have changed. I hand fed their tuna for a while. I offered Glais the first piece and I made it a large bit, he dropped it for Mow. I did it again. He dropped that bit as well. Then I gave him a piece about quarter of the size and he ate that.
He found a large bug in the compost. He called Mow for that.
This are the kind of things I expect to see from a cockerel maturing into a decent rooster.
He's still not sure what to do about Mow wandering off further into the field than he considers safe. If I go and stand by Mow he'll come over and I can then leave and he'll stay with her. But, he is venturing further into the field in general.
Over the last couple of days he's been less grumpy about Sylph and the roosting disputes are over for now at least.

Our celebrations. People got a kick out of our "mommy and me" costumes.

Tax, Owl. He's one of our flashy roos.
That’s great! I hope you didn’t have to drive!

When my youngest was in her last year of high school, she was invited to a Halloween party. She decided to dress as a bunch of grapes, so we blew up umpty-ump number of purple balloons and attached them to her long-sleeved T and pants.

And that was when she realized that she somehow had to climb into a car while wrapped in balloons (including on her backside) and drive 30 miles to Oak Ridge…

My neighbor has a bunch of various kinds of squash decorating her porch and steps. She has offered them to me for the chickens when she moves on to other decorations. There must be 15? 18? various sized squash/gourds there. I might have to smash some of them open with a hammer. I think I'll "start" one or two by cutting off a layer of rind and see if the ladies want to do the rest of the carving.

I get some every year

(Looking slightly cyanotic there, I know. Hoping it was just a combination of dehydration - think she'd been sitting since early morning - and the stress of me daring to look at her and then steal her eggs. I gave her some wet mash and I'll see what like she is the morn.)
How’s your broody doing today?
