Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

So human warriors and conquered Neanderthal females then?
Not likely from I saw on a Why Files episode. Apparently
Interestingly, loud noises don't seem to bother our chickens. Maybe birds don't get gun shy?
my chickens are not gun shy at all. In fact, I had one build a nest about two feet to the side of the targets on the side of the hill. When I first got them they would scatter at the sound of gun fire but now they’re stupid fearless about it. I have to shoo them out of the way sometimes.

My chickens have seen our feral cats their entire lives, have never been attacked by them. But my roosters still make concerned noises when a cat runs past the coops.
The feral cats here always seem to be deciding whether or not chickens would make a good meal. Sounds like your roosters trust them as much as I do 👀

I will leave the serious books to Perris and others. A really easy read is the chicken chronicles by Alice Walker, read it in one sitting and good account of her realising that chickens are sentient beings. Chicken boy: my life with chickens is interesting although there are a number of the usual bits of misinformation about chooks (eg egg song and others) also a bit of an insight into the duchess of devonshire’s love of chickens.

An oft posted picture that kind of sums her up here: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f5/76/95/f576953df00bf1f6754b6783ee1d29cd.jpg
What else would one wear to feed the chickens? :lau
Edited to add link
Was she a Mitford? I think I remember reading about her in one of Jessica Mitford’s books. Went by Debo?

That was one bizarre family.

Yes indeed. A Mitford.
I think the youngest of the sisters.

My chickens were scared of the cat that swung by every so often. The cat was scared of the chickens as well. It wouldn't come close if it saw a chicken by where I put the food bowl.

He runs and flies and as you can see in the pictures, making use of space above head height. He is one of the most energetic cockerels I've known.
I've been really enjoying the energy of these three! Lots of running and flying and tree hugging most of the day, but this is their favourite spot between supper and bedtime :)

Very exciting for us this week is that they now all have names: Abney is our cockerel, and his (half?) sister Teal is on the right. Pippi is a different breed (we think she's a leghorn and the others are unknown!), and she apparently didn't get the memo about posing for the photo...

(and for those without the same references: we named them all after children's fictional characters. Pippi was chosen by my niece, and the others sort of followed on!)

I've never heard of that - what? podcast? tv show? You need to provide a proper reference if you want me to look at it. Meanwhile here's one for you

I had started a reply and then got distracted and it tagged onto my later reply to something completely different. Why Files is a podcast and a YouTube show. It covers all kinds of conspiracies, mysteries, interesting stories historical and modern. He did one on Neanderthals that was kind of terrifying but I think he debunked some of the hypotheses he talked about the size difference between Neandethals and homo sapiens (like the Neanderthal women would have been bigger and badder than a homo sapien male). But I would have to watch it again and that’s why I got distracted in my response. Not that I’ve had a chance to watch it again but if you do don’t do it before bed 😆

It doesn't sound like that is going to debunk the story of what has happened and continues to happen after a war through the entirety of human history.
