Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

The first reference article is interesting because it compares chimpanzees to humans (from the reference in the introduction from the original article: “Surprisingly, human tissues, particularly the brain, exhibit lower purine levels compared to chimpanzees and macaque”) but the article from Nature (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-61605-4#ref-CR5) which your link discusses does not compare humans and Neanderthals to chimpanzees. I would be interested to see the Lysine data on that because we all know a mature chimp is much stronger than a full-grown man. Even a juvenile chimp is dangerous despite being smaller than a human. Perhaps that information is in another one of the references? If the ADSL effects athletic performance in humans I would expect comparing it to chimpanzees would clarify its role in Neanderthal performance. I would be more interested to see that the data on “humanized mice” lol.

Two hours today. Windy, damp, but above 10C.

Thinking about Lima this afternoon.
When she was sick.

Recovering. An extraordinary hen.

Something has changed. I'm not sure what. The change is to do with them, not me. It seems Glais has learned something but again, I'm not sure what.
The only behaviour that obviously shows a change is the roosting and the positions. Glais has roosted next to Sylph the past couple of nights and now roosts between the two. There's more when one views them out but I can't adequately describe it.

Lima was special! What a zest for life!

And hopefully/probably? it's complete ignorance on the part of the fireworks setters that no animals appreciate explosives going off outside their bedroom. Many humans don't think about the experiences of animals other than dogs and cats (if most of us even think that much, I guess).
Even when told around here about illegal fireworks, people don't care about animals or PTSD veterans. They insist they aren't hurting anyone, and oops if the pasture catches on fire.

“It’s all about MEEEEEEE and what I want!”

It can't be rehashed enough. It isn't like this everywhere in the world.
There are fairly obvious reasons why BYC is like this. One probably doesn't want to look too deeply into these reasons and one certainly doesn't want to make a posted issue of them.:p
Unfortunately it's not just the rooster issue. There are topics, in fact I have a list of such topics, that are prone to getting very badly informed advice on.
Change comes slowly, especially if one is trying to address topics that are cornerstones of the establishment.
Most of my articles attempt to offer an alternative view. Judging by the response to them, not everyone is taken in by the establishment's view.

There is one thread in particular that I wish I had used video to demonstrate the point I was trying to make regarding rooster behaviour.

Please keep rehashing. We need to learn - those of us who didn't grow up with chickens. And even if we did, we might have learned the common misconceptions.

Are you going to share it with us? Or just tease? :p

I'll start: if your chicken won't eat the bagged processed chicken feed you bought for it, stop giving it anything else to eat until it does :th
Don't forget - they only need 10 feet of run space. It's like saying it's fine to have a dog in apartment. Sure you can, but are you going to walk it 5 times a day? When does it get to run and be a dog?
Same for chickens. They need space to explore and be chickens.
Sorry for the advice from a newbie. I'm a lifelong dog owner though.
